Waleska, GA – The #6 Patriots opened the series in strong fashion Friday afternoon, defeating #14 Reinhardt University 9-4 at Ken White Field. With the win, Cumberlands improves to 11-3 on the season while the Eagles drop to 5-11.
Wesley Culley earned the win on the mound, tossing 4.1 innings while allowing just two runs (one earned) and striking out seven.
Brayden Stewart was solid in relief, working the final 4.2 innings and allowing two runs while striking out five to secure the victory.
Offensively,
Derick Andiarena and
Ronald Almanzar powered the Patriots. Andiarena finished with three RBI, highlighted by a two-run home run in the first inning. Almanzar went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBI, and two runs scored.
Dariel Castillo added two hits and scored twice, while
Zamaurion Hatcher chipped in a pair of hits and an RBI.
Cumberlands wasted no time jumping out front in the top of the first. Castillo singled to open the game before Andiarena launched a two-run home run to give UC an early 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Hatcher drove in another run with a single to extend the advantage to 3-0.
The Patriots added three more runs in the second inning. After Castillo walked, Almanzar crushed a two-run home run to push the lead to 6-0.
Reinhardt answered with two runs in the bottom of the second, but Cumberlands continued to apply pressure. In the fourth, Castillo doubled and later scored on a Reinhardt error to make it 7-2.
UC added two more insurance runs in the fifth inning. Hatcher doubled and later stole home, and Vasquez came around to score on a balk to extend the lead to 9-2.
Reinhardt managed single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, but the Patriots pitching staff closed the door to secure the 9-4 win over the 14th-ranked Eagles.
Cumberlands and Reinhardt will resume the series Saturday February 28
th with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
