Patriots Can’t Overcome Slow Start as They Fall at Home

Williamsburg, KY – The #15 Patriots women's basketball team couldn't overcome an early deficit as they fell to #4 Campbellsville 81-63, Monday night on Randy Vernon Court.  With the win the Tigers improve to 18-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while the Patriots move to 17-6 and 2-5 in MSC play.

Jaydyn Carrico led the way Cumberlands with 17 points, including going 7-7 from the charity stripe.  Zaram Fredricks notched 10 points, nine rebounds, and five blocks in the game, while Joy Kendrick chipped in ten points and eight rebounds.  Lakin Burke notched eight points, a team-high 11 rebounds and a career-high five steals. 

Campbellsville came out with strong defense that forced eight turnovers, while the jumping out to a 14-0 lead, four minutes into the contest.  Noel Smith drove the basket and laid it in putting Cumberlands on the board.  After the first quarter Campbellsville took a 24-4 lead. 

The Patriots added some free throws before Joy Kendrick hit a jumper to cut the deficit to 30-13 with 5:51 remaining. A few minutes later, the Jaydyn Carrico grabbed an offensive rebound and found Lakin Burke on the block for a layup making it 35-19 in favor of the Tigers.  UC utilized strong free throw shooting as Carrico went 6-6 from the charity stripe to cut the deficit to 35-25 with 45 seconds remaining in the first half.

Campbellsville opened the third quarter on 6-0 run before Kendrick notched a putback to cut the deficit to 43-27 two minutes into the third quarter.  A minute later, Carrico converted a three-point play to spark a 9-1 Patriot run cutting the deficit to ten points at 46-36 with 5:59 remaining.  Campbellsville pushed their lead to 17 points as Carrico sparked a 6-0 run, before Campbellsville took a 63-45 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The Patriots and Tigers played an even fourth quarter with each team scoring 18 points for the 81-63 final. 

Cumberlands will return to the court on Thursday, February 5th, when they travel to #24 Lindsey Wilson. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
