Williamsburg, KY – After dropping the series opener on Thursday, #6 UC (25-6, 8-1) bounced back to secure the Mid-South Conference series win over Lindsey Wilson (13-18) with a pair of victories in Saturday's doubleheader at Doyle Buhl Stadium. Cumberlands took game one 11-9 before completing the day with a 13-3 win in game two.
Prior to the doubleheader, Cumberlands honored Head Coach
Brad Shelton ahead of his retirement following an incredible 31-year coaching career, including 25 seasons leading the Patriots. Fittingly, his son
Clay Shelton delivered a standout performance at the plate, playing a pivotal role in both victories.
No. 6 Cumberlands Rallies for 11-9 Win in Game One
The Patriots used a late offensive push to rally past Lindsey Wilson 11-9 in a back-and-forth opener.
JD Price earned the win in relief, improving to 3-0 on the season after tossing a scoreless inning.
Jaden Morris picked up the save, striking out two in a clean seventh inning to secure the victory.
At the plate, the Patriots leaned on the long ball.
Johnboy Rittenhouse,
Derick Andiarena,
Pedro Vasquez, and
Clay Shelton each homered, while Shelton finished with three hits and two RBI. Vasquez added three RBI, and
Dariel Castillo scored three runs in the win.
Cumberlands jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as Rittenhouse launched a solo home run and Castillo later scored on an RBI groundout.
Lindsey Wilson answered with three runs in the second and added another in the third to take a 4-2 lead.
The Patriots responded in the bottom of the third as Shelton homered before Andiarena delivered a two-run blast to put UC back on top 5-4.
After the Blue Raiders regained the lead in the fourth and fifth innings, Cumberlands trailed 9-5 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
UC answered in a big way.
Bryce Turner delivered a key hit to bring in a run before Vasquez crushed a three-run home run to tie the game at 9-9.
The Patriots took the lead for good in the sixth inning as Shelton launched his second home run of the game, followed by an RBI single from Rittenhouse to make it 11-9.
Price and Morris combined to shut the door over the final two innings to secure the comeback victory.
No. 6 Cumberlands Completes Series Win with 13-3 Victory
Cumberlands carried the momentum into game two, using a balanced offensive attack and strong pitching to earn a 13-3 win and clinch the series.
Nolan Wilson picked up the win, improving to 5-0 after allowing three runs on seven hits over five innings while striking out five.
Brayden Stewart closed out the game with two scoreless innings.
Clay Shelton once again led the offensive charge, driving in five runs including a two-run home run, capping off a memorable day in which he shined following the pregame recognition of his father.
The Patriots totaled 16 hits in the victory.
Ronald Almanzar and
Pedro Vasquez each homered, while
Derick Andiarena added two hits and an RBI, and
Zamaurion Hatcher collected two hits and scored twice.
Cumberlands struck first in the opening inning as Almanzar launched a solo home run to give UC a 1-0 lead.
The Patriots added three more runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from Vasquez to extend the advantage to 4-0.
Lindsey Wilson cut into the lead with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to make it 6-3.
UC responded with a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by Shelton's bases-clearing double to push the lead to 9-3.
The Patriots added three more runs in the sixth, capped by Shelton's two-run home run, to extend the advantage to 13-3 and put the game out of reach.
Cumberlands will return to action on Tuesday, March 31st for a midweek contest at home against (RV) Milligan.
