Columbia, KY – The No. 12 University of the Cumberlands women's tennis team battled but ultimately fell 5-2 to No. 2 Lindsey Wilson on Monday afternoon at the Henry Baughman Tennis Complex.
Lindsey Wilson secured the doubles point after claiming victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The Patriot duo of Mahiro Hara and YuFang Liu fell 6-1 in the top position, while Victoria Zarate and Haruna Kojima dropped a 6-4 decision at No. 2 doubles. The No. 3 doubles match featuring Rion Yanuma and Eva Cancarevic went unfinished with Lindsey Wilson leading 5-4.
Cumberlands picked up two singles victories in the match, including a comeback win at the top of the lineup. Marina Nagai rebounded after dropping the first set to defeat Mayra Gisone in three sets, 1-6, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 1 singles.
The Patriots' other point came at No. 6 singles, where Liu delivered a strong performance with a straight-set 6-4, 6-1 victory over Hang Nguyen.
Lindsey Wilson secured the match with wins at the remaining singles positions. Bryndis Rosa fell 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, while Zarate dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision at No. 3. At No. 4 singles, Kojima forced a third set after taking the second set in a tiebreak, but ultimately fell in a match tiebreak 6-2, 6-7, 10-6. Hara rounded out the lineup with a 6-3, 6-3 loss at No. 5 singles.
The Patriots are back on the court on Wednesday, April 1, where they will host Midway for a rescheduled match from earlier this season. The first serve is slated for 1:00 PM.
