Mobile, AL – The thirteenth-ranked University of the Cumberlands fell 5-4 to the University of Mobile (Ala.) on Thursday afternoon. The Patriots move to 11-6 overall on the season.
MOBILE WALKS IT OFF IN SEVENTH
Mobile capitalized early in the first inning, using an error and a pair of RBI groundouts and singles to take a 2-0 lead.
Cumberlands responded in the third. After Abby Guinn reached on an error and Maleah Clinton singled, Grace Ross delivered a two-RBI double to left field to tie the game at 2-2. Later in the inning, Ross scored on a sacrifice fly from Emily Delgado to give the Patriots a 3-2 advantage.
The Patriots extended their lead in the fifth. Clinton singled and stole second before Delgado doubled to left field to bring her home, pushing the margin to 4-2.
Mobile answered in the bottom half of the inning. A leadoff double and two Patriot errors allowed the Rams to plate two unearned runs and even the score at 4-4.
The game remained tied until the seventh. After a leadoff double and a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third, Mobile drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. A bases-loaded walk then brought home the winning run for a 5-4 final.
Clinton led Cumberlands offensively with a 2-for-4 performance and two runs scored. Ross drove in two runs with her double, and Delgado added an RBI double of her own.
Jessica Cord worked 6.2 innings in the circle, allowing five runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out two.
