#13 Cumberlands Earns First Top 10 Win

Gulf Shores, AL – The thirteenth-ranked University of the Cumberlands swept Day Two of the Gulf Coast Invitational on Saturday, edging Texas A&M University–San Antonio 1-0 before earning an 8-4 victory over No. 10 Central Methodist University (Mo.). The Patriots improve to 13-7 overall on the season. 

Game 1: CORD SPINS SHUTOUT IN 1-0 WIN 

Jessica Cord delivered another strong outing in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout to lead Cumberlands past Texas A&M–San Antonio. 

The Patriots scored the game's only run in the first inning. After Grace Ross singled and advanced on a walk and hit-by-pitch, Alyssa Garcia crossed the plate on a passed ball to give UC a 1-0 lead. 

Cord worked efficiently throughout, scattering three hits over seven innings while striking out two and working around limited traffic. Texas A&M–San Antonio threatened in the fourth with a triple but was unable to push a run across. 

Ross finished with two hits, including a double, as Cumberlands secured the narrow victory. 

Game 2: PATS RALLY PAST NO. 10 CENTRAL METHODIST 

Central Methodist struck first in the third inning, scoring four runs on five hits to take a 4-0 lead. 

Cumberlands answered immediately in the bottom half. After Ross singled and Garcia walked, Emily Delgado launched a three-run home run to cut the deficit to 4-3. Later in the inning, Jenna Fabela delivered an RBI single to even the score at 4-4. 

The Patriots took control in the fifth. Kristen Smith blasted a two-run home run, the first in her collegiate career, to give UC its first lead of the game, and Abby Guinn added an RBI single to extend the advantage. Ross capped the inning with an RBI single, pushing the lead to 8-4. 

Cord entered in relief and stabilized the game, working scoreless innings to preserve the victory and secure the Patriots' first Top 10 win of the season. 

Ross collected multiple hits in the contest, while Delgado and Smith each delivered key extra-base hits in the comeback effort.
