#2 Patriots Utilize Second Half Surge in Top-5 Win

Williamsburg, KY – The second ranked Cumberlands women's lacrosse team netted ten straight goals, over the final two quarters, to defeat fourth-ranked Reinhardt 16-8 Saturday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex.  With the win, UC improves to 16-1 overall and 5-0 in AAC play, while the Eagles moved to 10-2 and 5-1 in AAC play.              

Ashlee Baker led the way for the Patriots with six assists and nine points, while Anna Lobbezoo netted four goals and scooped four draw controls.  Kaitlyn Friel and Emma Rittman each netted hat tricks, while Rittman scooped eight draw controls. Lenora DeVries added two goals, four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Mikayla Kimsey made 13 saves, including seven in the second half. 

Reinhardt struck first with a man-up goal, before Mikayla Kimsey made a save just over a minute into the contest.  The Patriots even the score as Ashlee Baker found Kaitlyn Friel cutting for a man-up goal as Baker recorded her 100th point of the season. Sarah Linam forced a turnover and on the ensuing possession Baker found Lenora DeVries for a goal making it 2-1 with 9:37 remaining.  The Eagles netted three straight goals before Baker converted a free position cutting the deficit to 4-3 after the first quarter.

The Eagles extended their lead to 5-3, however, Kimsey made back-to-back saves before Anna Lobbezoo converted an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to 5-4 with 10:43 remaining.  The two teams traded possession as Anna Lobbezoo found Baker netted her second goal of the contest to bring Cumberlands within 6-5 with 5:32 remaining.  On the next possession, Baker found Friel for a transition goal tying the game at 6-6 with 4:25 left in the first half.  Reinhardt added a late goal to take a 7-6 lead into halftime.

Kimsey tallied a pair of saves and a caused turnover in the opening minutes of the third quarter before Baker connect with Lenora DeVries in front of the cage for a goal making it 8-7 with 9:35 remaining.  Emma Rittman scooped the next draw control and, on that possession, Lobbezoo put a well-placed shot into the cage tying the score at 8-8.  A few minutes later, Reese Kincaid forced a turnover before Lobbezoo converted a free position goal to put Cumberlands in front 9-8 with 4:56 remaining.  The Patriots took advantage of penalties netted four man-up goals, including a pair of goals from Rittman to extend the lead to 13-8 heading into the fourth quarter. 

Kimsey notched a pair of saves to open the fourth quarter before Audrey Donaldson connected with Baker and Rittman goals to make it 15-8 midway through the period.  The Patriots defense continued to clamp down as Kimsey tallied a pair of saves, while Christina Carter scored a man-up goal for the 16-8 final.    

The Patriots will return to the field on Wednesday, April 15th, when they travel to Georgetown, KY to face the (RV) Tigers.  Gametime is set for 6 p.m.
