Columbia, SC – Caleb Mason netted a career-high four goals, while
Dom Lulow tallied nine points as the seventh-ranked Cumberlands men's lacrosse team defeated Columbia 24-4 in their regular season finale Saturday afternoon. With the win the Patriots move to 8-6 overall and 5-4 in AAC play.
Lulow tallied five goals and four assists to tie is career-high with nine points, while
Will Rogers added three goals and three assists in the game.
Alex Heck and
Dennis Smith each chipped in hat tricks in the game as
Michael Adams went 10-12 with a team-best four ground balls.
JD Cook made eight saves in the win.
UC set the tone early with back-to-back goals from
Caleb Mason and
Will Rogers put UC in front 2-0. Cumberlands controlled the possession over the next few minutes before Rogers found a cutting
Dom Lulow for a goal extending the lead to 3-0 midway through the first quarter.
Cole Bastian added a goal as part of a three-goal Patriot run extending the lead to 6-1 with 3:18 remaining. UC netted two of the next three goals as Lulow found Rogers for a goal in the closing seconds of the period to take a 9-2 advantage.
After trading goals to open the second quarter
Johnny Simpson forced a turnover and on the ensuing possession Rogers found a cutting
Caden Abbott for a goal making it 11-3 with 8:50 remaining.
Sid Stewart and
Dennis Smith added back-to-back goals, in a 27 second span, making it 13-3 with 5:51 remaining. UC continued to control the possession and added a trio of goals from Lulow to take a 16-3 lead into half.
JD Cook made four saves to open the third quarter as Lulow added an unassisted goal for his fifth goal of the game to make it 17-3 midway through the period. Cook added a pair of saves, while
Caleb Mason netted back-to-back goals for a career-high four goals as Cumberlands took a 19-3 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Patriots took advantage of a Koalas penalty as
Alex Heck netted a man-up goal on the opening possession of the fourth quarter. Moments later,
Ty Grooms netted an unassisted goal giving UC the 21-3 advantage. The two teams traded goals before
Nathan Cook fired a shot into the cage making it 23-4 with 4:57 remaining. UC added a late goal for the 24-4 final.
