Bowling Green, KY – For the second time this season, the University of the Cumberlands baseball team swept the Mid-South Conference weekly honors as Justin Cortez was named MSC Pitcher of the Week and Ronald Almanzar earned MSC Player of the Week, conference officials announced Monday.
Cortez turned in a dominant outing on the mound, earning the win in his lone appearance as No. 9 Cumberlands completed a three-game sweep of Campbellsville to secure its fourth consecutive MSC Regular Season title. The junior tossed five innings, allowing just one run on one hit while striking out seven batters. He limited opposing hitters to a .063 batting average and improved to 3-0 on the season. The honor marks Cortez's first MSC weekly award of the year and his career.
At the plate, Almanzar powered the Patriots offense, batting .417 to lead UC to a 3-0 week. He recorded two three-hit performances in the series against Campbellsville and delivered a standout showing in the finale, going 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, and six RBIs. Almanzar finished the week 5-for-12 with three home runs, a double, 10 RBIs, five runs scored, and three walks while posting a .533 on-base percentage. This marks his second MSC weekly honor of the season.
The Patriots will open play in the Mid-South Conference tournament on Wednesday April 29th, against the winner of #6 Bethel/#7 Georgetown at 12 p.m. ET/11 a.m. CT.
