Lawrenceville, GA – The twentieth-ranked University of the Cumberlands split its opening day doubleheader against RV Georgia Gwinnett College on Friday afternoon. The Patriots dropped game one in a 2-1 walk-off before responding with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap. Cumberlands moves to 21-13 overall.
Game 1: WALK-OFF SINKS PATS
Cumberlands struck first in the second inning when Jae Jae Phillips doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Krystal Anne Castaneda to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.
The Patriots held that advantage behind strong pitching from Jessica Cord, who limited Georgia Gwinnett to just four hits through the first six innings.
In the seventh, the Grizzlies mounted a late rally. After putting two runners aboard, Kaitlyn Crumley tied the game with an RBI single. Moments later, Reesie Burch delivered a walk-off single to left center to give Georgia Gwinnett a 2-1 victory.
Game 2: PATS RESPOND IN TIGHT REMATCH
Cumberlands bounced back in game two behind another strong pitching performance.
After Georgia Gwinnett scored in the fifth to take a 1-0 lead, the Patriots answered in the sixth. Emily Delgado doubled to start the inning, and Jenna Fabela followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
Cumberlands took the lead in the seventh. Ryann Livingston reached base and advanced before Alyssa Garcia's single created pressure. Livingston scored on a passed ball to give the Patriots a 2-1 advantage.
Delgado earned the win in the circle, allowing just one run over six innings, while Jessica Cord closed out the final frame to secure the save.
Fabela drove in the tying run, while Delgado led the offense with three hits in the win.
