Columbia, KY – The seventeenth-ranked University of the Cumberlands softball team opened Mid-South Conference Tournament play with a 6-5 walk-off victory in the bottom of seventh inning over third-seeded Campbellsville University (Ky.) on Thursday night. The Patriots, the tournament's #2 seed, improve to 35-16 overall and advance in the winner's bracket.
PATS RALLY EARLY, WALK IT OFF LATE
Campbellsville struck first in the opening inning, but Cumberlands answered immediately as Grace Ross launched a solo home run to even the score at 1-1.
The Tigers regained the lead in the second and extended it in the third, scoring three runs to take a 5-2 advantage.
Cumberlands responded in the bottom half of the third inning with a three-run rally. MaKenzie Henderson delivered a two-RBI double before Kristen Smith drove in another run to tie the game at 5-5.
Both teams settled in over the middle innings as the pitching and defense tightened, keeping the game even heading into the final frame.
In the seventh, the Patriots broke through. After putting a runner in scoring position, Henderson delivered again with an RBI single to score Emily Delgado and secure the 6-5 walk-off victory.
Jessica Cord went the distance in the circle to earn the win, while Henderson led the offense with three RBIs.
