WILLIAMSBURG, KY – A 41-point first half propelled the University of the Cumberlands football team to a season-opening victory Thursday night as the Patriots defeated Union Commonwealth 41-28 in the Battle for the Brass Lantern at James H. Taylor II Stadium. UC improves to 1-0 on the season and extends its winning streak over the Bulldogs to seven straight games. The Patriots piled up 431 yards of offense, including 231 on the ground, while averaging 7.3 yards per play.
 
Juan Bullard Jr. led the Patriot rushing attack with 136 yards and two touchdowns on just eight carries, averaging 17.0 yards per attempt. Jayden Clayton added 64 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, while Tanner Marsh found the end zone twice with a 75-yard touchdown reception and a 10-yard rushing score. Drew Gregg finished 10-of-15 through the air for 200 yards and a touchdown, with Michael Petty hauling in two passes for 56 yards.
 
The Cumberlands defense came up with several momentum-changing plays throughout the night, highlighted by a pair of interceptions. Tion Garmon returned his first-quarter interception 89 yards for a touchdown, while Khalil Mollay added a 17-yard interception return late in the fourth quarter. Major Newman led the Patriots with seven tackles, while Garmon, Mollay and Naitwan Thompson each finished with six. Ritt Tankersley recorded two tackles for loss, and Thompson added a blocked field goal as UC held Union scoreless in the fourth quarter.
 
The Patriot defense opened the game by forcing a three-and-out, and the offense needed little time to capitalize. Bullard opened UC's first possession with a five-yard run before Gregg connected with Marsh for a 75-yard touchdown to give Cumberlands a 6-0 advantage with 12:27 remaining in the opening quarter. Union answered with a 38-yard touchdown run to move ahead 7-6.
 
That lead lasted just 17 seconds. After an incomplete pass on first down, Bullard broke through the defense for a 75-yard touchdown run, putting the Patriots back in front 13-7. The defense then created its first turnover of the season on Union's ensuing drive. Facing third-and-six at the UC 22, Garmon intercepted a pass and raced 89 yards the other way for a touchdown, extending the advantage to 20-7.
 
Cumberlands continued to control the game defensively, forcing punts on Union's next two possessions. Tankersley opened the second of those drives with a two-yard tackle for loss, and the Bulldogs eventually faced fourth-and-22 before punting the ball to midfield. The Patriots immediately took advantage of the field position as Gregg found Petty for a 40-yard gain before Marsh ran it in from 10 yards out on the next snap, giving UC a 27-7 lead early in the second quarter.
 
Union responded with a touchdown to make it 27-14, but the Patriots answered with another explosive scoring drive. Gregg connected with Cade Lamb for 12 yards before Bullard ripped off a 43-yard run to the Union 11. Two plays later, Clayton found the end zone from 12 yards out to extend the lead to 34-14. The Bulldogs answered again with a 79-yard touchdown pass, cutting the deficit to 34-21 with 6:52 remaining in the half.
 
UC closed the half with its longest scoring possession of the night, putting together a 12-play, 65-yard march that took more than six minutes off the clock. Clayton moved the chains with runs of 16 and 15 yards, while Gregg connected with Carter Stewart for 19 yards to move inside the red zone. Facing fourth-and-goal from the one, Bullard powered across the goal line for his second touchdown of the night, sending Cumberlands into halftime with a 41-21 advantage. The defense added one more stop before the break as Kantrel Smith stuffed Union on fourth-and-one near midfield.
 
The second half tested the Patriot defense as turnovers repeatedly gave Union opportunities with favorable field position. After a UC fumble near midfield early in the third quarter, Cumberlands forced a three-and-out and punt. Union later recovered another fumble at the Patriot two-yard line and converted the short field into a touchdown, trimming the lead to 41-28. When another UC turnover gave the Bulldogs possession at the Cumberlands 22 later in the quarter, the defense held again. Tankersley recorded a tackle for loss near the goal line before pressure from Will Simmons helped stall the drive, and Union's 34-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left to keep the margin at 13.
 
The defense continued to shut the door in the fourth. Union moved to the UC 14 on its opening possession of the quarter, but three straight incompletions forced a field-goal attempt that Thompson blocked. Later, the Bulldogs put together a 15-play drive and advanced to the Cumberlands 29 before Mollay intercepted a pass and returned it 17 yards. Union received one final possession with 1:06 remaining, but four straight incompletions from the Patriot 23 ended the threat and secured the 41-28 victory.
 
Cumberlands finished the night a perfect 4-for-4 in the red zone and forced six Union punts, two interceptions and a pair of failed field-goal attempts. The Patriots return to action on Saturday, September 5th when they travel to Bluefield, VA to take on Bluefield University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 PM.
