WILLIAMSBURG, KY - The University of the Cumberlands football team returns to James H. Taylor, II Stadium on Saturday as the Patriots welcome Warner University for a non-conference matchup. UC enters the contest 2-0 after road wins over Union Commonwealth and Bluefield, while Warner comes to Williamsburg at 0-1 following a 59-10 loss at NCAA Division II Valdosta State.
 
Cumberlands is 2-0 all-time against Warner, including a 27-14 road victory last season. The Patriots also won the only previous meeting in Williamsburg, taking a 23-7 victory in 2017. Kickoff is set for 1:30 PM.
 
Winning Up Front
Warner's defensive front presents one of the biggest challenges for the Patriots on Saturday. Despite the Royals surrendering 275 rushing yards in their opener, the defense produced 13 tackles for loss and four sacks, consistently finding ways to create penetration behind the line of scrimmage.
 
Head Coach Shan Housekeeper believes the numbers only tell part of the story when evaluating Warner's front.
 
"This will be one of the best defensive lines we see all year long, in my opinion," said Housekeeper. "They've got some of the most talented kids that we'll run into. They're very talented and they're big. They're going to really try to get vertical penetration and disrupt what we're doing offensively."
 
That creates an intriguing matchup against a Cumberlands offense that has averaged 217.5 rushing yards per game and six yards per carry through two contests. Juan Bullard Jr. has rushed for 203 yards and three touchdowns, while Jayden Clayton has added 141 yards and two scores.
 
"They're really good on defense. They're very disruptive and they play really hard," said Housekeeper. "We've got a real test for Saturday."
 
Multiple Ways to Attack
UC enters Saturday averaging 503.5 yards and 45.5 points per game, producing 572 yards through the air and 435 on the ground. The Patriots have averaged nine yards per play while scoring 12 touchdowns through the opening two games.
 
That balance gives Cumberlands multiple ways to attack a Warner defense that Housekeeper expects to challenge the Patriots throughout the afternoon. "We have some very talented football players," said Housekeeper. "They took a lot of work last year as a group and have that cohesiveness to basically pick up where they left off and not have to start from scratch."
 
Housekeeper also pointed to the experience and leadership throughout the offense, including Drew Gregg, Tanner Marsh, Nick Goodwin, Roger McNeer and Bullard.
 
"They've got maturity, they've got experience, they've got cohesion, they've got friendships," said Housekeeper. "All those things kind of add up to being pretty good."
 
Gregg has completed 68.8% of his passes for 482 yards and three touchdowns through two games, while Michael Petty has 202 receiving yards and Cade Lamb has 125 yards and two receiving touchdowns.
 
Containing the Royals
Warner's offense was limited to 180 yards and seven first downs in its season opener, while converting just 2-of-15 third-down attempts. The Royals finished with 117 rushing yards and 63 through the air while turning the ball over three times.
 
Despite those numbers, Housekeeper expects Warner to challenge the Patriots in several different ways, particularly with mobility at quarterback and athleticism on the perimeter.
 
"Their quarterback likes to run around a little bit, so that's obviously a factor," said Housekeeper. "Being able to make sure that we can control the running game is going to be a big part as well. They've got some talented receivers out on the edge, and being able to match up with their skill out there is definitely a priority for us."
 
For Cumberlands, the emphasis will be on finishing opportunities when they arise. The Patriots have recorded 13 tackles for loss through two games, including nine in the win over Bluefield. Jaquon Hall and Kantrel Smith each recorded two tackles for loss and a sack in that contest.
 
"We've got to make the plays when they're presented," said Housekeeper. "We've really got to finish plays and understand how to complete tackles, finish pass breakups and finish interceptions. When we start to cross over and do that, I think we're going to be all right."
 
Finding an Edge on Special Teams
Special teams remains another area where Cumberlands will look to create an advantage Saturday.
 
Khalil Arman enters the matchup after connecting on all three field-goal attempts against Bluefield, including kicks from 45, 47 and 40 yards. Jack Atkinson averaged 52 yards on his two punts in that game, highlighted by a 68-yarder that pinned the Rams at their own two-yard line.
 
Warner, meanwhile, punted nine times in its opener and averaged 29.8 yards per punt.
 
"We're getting better. We're not where we're capable of being yet," said Housekeeper. "We have the skills there, we have the schemes there. Now we've just got to get the consistency there."
 
That consistency remains the overall objective as the Patriots prepare for their third game of the season.
 
"Finishing plays on defense is definitely the area we've got to develop, and then maintain consistency on offense," said Housekeeper. "We're going to have a really good defense we're facing, so can we maintain at a high level? And then on special teams, start to gain a bit more of an advantage."
 
Cumberlands looks to improve to 3-0 and remain unbeaten all-time against Warner when the two teams meet Saturday at James H. Taylor, II Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 PM.
