Barbourville, KY – The #14 University of the Cumberlands men's soccer team fell 4-1 to #24 Union Commonwealth Saturday night. With the loss, the Patriots move to 2-3-1 on the season.
Union struck twice in the opening 11 minutes to take an early 2-0 advantage. Cumberlands responded with sustained pressure as Samuel Dolobaipu forced multiple saves, while Dunsting Cohen Jr. nearly cut into the deficit when his header hit the crossbar in the 25'. Union was reduced to 10 men in the 28', giving UC a man advantage for the remainder of the half.
The Patriots continued to push forward as Nico Romero put a header on frame, while Vinicius Serafim added another shot on goal late in the half. Despite the pressure, Union added a third goal in the 40' to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
Cumberlands came out of the break with an immediate response. In the 48', Dunsting Cohen Jr. set up a cross for Nico Romero, who found the back of the net with a header to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The match returned to even strength in the 57' when Cumberlands was reduced to 10 men. UC continued to create chances throughout the second half, generating looks from Jesus Macaya, Jannes Kühn, Luca Piazza, Mateo Godoy and Dolobaipu. Godoy put a shot on frame in the 74', while Cohen Jr. forced another save in the 84'. Union added a late goal in the 85' to secure the 4-1 final.
The Patriots return home Wednesday, September 16, to open Mid-South Conference play against Georgetown College as part of a women's and men's doubleheader at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex. The men's match is set for 7 p.m.
