Williamsburg, KY – Played their second match in two days, the 21
st-ranked Patriots earned a 3-0 sweep (25-13, 27-25, 25-20) over (RV) Cumberland Wednesday night at the UC Volleyball Gym. With the win, UC improves to 15-3 overall and 2-0 in MSC play.
Sara Zampedri led the way with 14 kills, a .467 hitting percentage, and 15 digs.
Alana Shiery added ten kills, and three blocks, while
Brynnley Bryant tallied seven kills and 11 digs.
Morgan Bentel made 18 digs, while
Savanah Jolly notched 33 assists.
The Phoenix jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first set, before a
Josie Newcom kill sparked a four-point Patriot run giving them a 5-3 advantage. UC added a five-point run that included kills from four different Pats players to extend their lead to 10-5. Cumberlands added a pair of three-point runs as UC made it 18-9. The Patriots notched four of the final five points in the set, capped off by a Zampedri kill taking the first set 25-13.
Behind strong serving from Jolly and Zampedri, UC took a 9-1 lead in the second set. The Phoenix battled back, however, a trio of kills from Zampedri coupled with a Shiery kill gave the Patriots a 16-10 lead. Cumberlands went on a 13-5 run to take a 23-21 lead before
Martina Frangella and Zampedri notched back-to-back kills to even the match at 23-23. Cumberlands notched four of the final five points capped off by a block from Shiery and Zampedri to take the set 27-25 and extend their lead 2-0.
The two teams traded points before a 6-1 run by the Patriots, highlighted by a pair of blocks to take an 8-3 lead.
Hadley Filipchuk notched a pair of aces as Cumberlands extended their lead to 14-7. A few plays later Jolly connected with Shiery twice to make it a 17-8. The Phoenix battled back to cut the lead to 22-19. Coming out of a timeout, UC earned kills from Newcom and pair from Bryant taking the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
Cumberlands returns to the court on Saturday, September 26
th, when they travel to Lima, OH to face #9 Aquinas and Northwestern Ohio. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
