WILLIAMSBURG, KY - Head Coach Matt Daniel and the University of the Cumberlands men's basketball program have announced their 2026-27 schedule, a challenging slate featuring several opponents coming off appearances in the NAIA National Championship, four teams that finished last season ranked in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25, and a full 12-game Mid-South Conference schedule. The Patriots enter the year looking to build off a 25-win season and their third consecutive trip to the NAIA National Championship Final Site.
 
Cumberlands will face four programs that finished last season ranked nationally, highlighted by defending national champion Freed-Hardeman, who finished the regular season ranked No. 1 before capturing the Red Banner in Kansas City. Pikeville finished No. 6, Keiser was ranked No. 11, and Georgetown closed the year at No. 14. The schedule also features several additional programs that qualified for last year's 64-team national championship field.
 
"We think we've put together a really good schedule," said Daniel. "With the metrics being important, strength of schedule and RPI really matter when it comes to national tournament bids. Obviously, our conference schedule is always going to be really tough with the teams in our league, but we thought our teams have done better over the last couple of years when we've really challenged ourselves in the nonconference. We've tried to do that again."
 
The season tips off inside the O. Wayne Rollins Center on Friday, October 23, when the Patriots host Simmons College of Kentucky at 7 PM. UC then heads to Barbourville to face Union Commonwealth on October 31 before returning home for one of its first major tests of the season against Pikeville on November 3. The Bears finished last season ranked sixth in the country after compiling a 25-3 record entering the postseason.
 
Cumberlands will get its first taste of back-to-back competition at the Campbellsville Classic on November 6-7, taking on Goshen College and IU Southeast. The Grenadiers are one of several opponents on the schedule that appeared in last year's NAIA National Championship field. UC then begins a four-game homestand with Johnson University on November 10 before welcoming Rio Grande on November 12 and IU Southeast for a second meeting on November 13. Alice Lloyd comes to Williamsburg for an 11 AM matchup on November 17. Johnson also qualified for last season's national tournament as a No. 16 seed.
 
The Patriots then hit the road for a challenging stretch, traveling to Rio Grande on November 20 and Dalton State on November 24 before opening December at Georgia Gwinnett on December 3. Both Dalton State and Georgia Gwinnett qualified for the 2026 NAIA National Championship, with Dalton earning a No. 10 seed and advancing to the Second Round.
 
Daniel believes those difficult early-season situations will be important for a roster featuring several new faces. "We've got a lot of new guys, and we wanted to put ourselves in adverse situations," said Daniel. "I think we'll find out a lot about our guys, our team and our makeup through those hard times early to see if we have what it takes to really compete when it matters, mostly in league play and hopefully in the postseason."
 
Cumberlands will also see both Rio Grande and IU Southeast twice during the nonconference portion of the schedule, giving the Patriots an opportunity to make adjustments against familiar opponents before entering the home-and-away format of MSC play.
 
"I think it's good just getting a feel for your opponents and having to play them a second time," said Daniel. "Both teams will be national tournament-caliber teams and be at the top of the River States Conference, so you're also getting to play two quality teams."
 
UC returns home to face Tennessee Wesleyan on December 8 before heading south for another challenging stretch in West Palm Beach, FL. The Patriots face Florida Memorial on December 16 before taking on Keiser University the following day. Keiser finished last season ranked No. 11 nationally with a 23-4 record entering postseason play and earned a No. 6 seed in the national tournament, where the Seahawks advanced to the Second Round. Cumberlands closes its nonconference schedule on December 30 with a road matchup against Milligan University.
 
The Mid-South Conference slate begins with one of the biggest tests as Cumberlands welcomes defending NAIA National Champion Freed-Hardeman to Williamsburg on January 7.
 
"Freed will be great. They'll have a really good team, as will everybody in our league," said Daniel. "Obviously, you want to get off to a good start and take care of your home court. But at the same time, there are 12 games in our conference and each of them only counts one. It's important to keep that perspective and take care of the one in front of us to get to the next one."
 
Following the conference opener, UC faces an immediate test away from Williamsburg with three consecutive road games. The Patriots travel to Lindsey Wilson on January 9, Campbellsville on January 14, and Cumberland University on January 16 before returning home to face Bethel on January 21. Lindsey Wilson and Bethel both appeared in last year's NAIA National Championship field, further adding to the depth of the MSC slate.
 
"There are just no nights off," said Daniel. "You've got to come ready to play. Specifically on the road, everybody is a little bit better at home, and we've seen that throughout our time. When you get a stretch like we've got, with one at home and then three on the road, it challenges you to see how tough you are. If you want to win when it matters most and win in March, you've got to be able to go on the road and find some wins."
 
UC then travels to Georgetown on January 23 before closing the month at home against Lindsey Wilson on January 30. Georgetown finished last season ranked No. 14 and entered the national tournament as a No. 3 seed, advancing through the First and Second Rounds to reach the Round of 16 in Kansas City.
 
February begins with another difficult road swing as the Patriots travel to Freed-Hardeman on February 4 before visiting Bethel on February 6. UC then returns to the Rollins Center for its final three regular-season contests, hosting Georgetown on February 11, Cumberland on February 13, and Campbellsville on February 18.
 
The Patriots have hosted the NAIA National Championship First and Second Rounds in each of the last three seasons, advancing to the Final Site in Kansas City each year. Daniel once again wants the difficult schedule to help UC build the résumé necessary to return to the national tournament and potentially bring postseason basketball back to Williamsburg.
 
"Any season that ends with being in the national tournament, I think there's success in that," said Daniel. "To get the opportunity to host and get two more home games obviously increases your opportunity to get to Kansas City and play at Municipal Auditorium. That's been huge for us."
