Columbia, KY – The third-ranked Patriots women's soccer team netted a pair of first half goals, while strong defense led to a clean sheet as UC earned the 2-0 win over #12 Lindsey Wilson Saturday night. With the win, Cumberlands improves to 5-1-3 on the year and 2-0 in MSC play, while the Blue Raiders move to 5-3-1 and 2-1 in conference play.
For the second straight match,
Letizia Traversone and Laura Bosca each netted a goal, while assisting on the other.
Morgan White anchored the Patriots defense with five saves as UC recorded its fifth shutout of the season.
Cumberlands looked to strike first as Traversone put a shot on frame in the 8', however a save kept the match scoreless. A minute later, White made a stop as Lindsey Wilson tried to convert a corner kick. The match remained scoreless until the 11' when
Abigail Little forced a turnover at midfield and began a counterattack.
Nicole Araujo pushed the ball forward to
Carmen Villa, who crossed it into the box where Traversone tipped it over to Bosca for the finish giving UC the 1-0 lead.
Lindsey Wilson looked for the equalizer tallying three shots over a five span as White added a save keeping UC in front. The score remained until the 21' when Bosca forced a turnover, ran a give-and-go with Araujo before sending the ball to the wing for Traversone to put a well-placed shot inside the back post extending the lead to 2-0. White made her third save of the first half in the 25' as the Blue Raiders tallied two shots and two corner kicks over the final 20 minutes of the half, however, the Patriots took the 2-0 advantage into the break.
The two teams traded corner kicks to open the second half before
Klara Kozakova put a shot on frame in the 54', which was saved. The Patriots defense of Samantha Sokolova,
Abigail Little,
Vlada Milovic, and
Maliah Mitchell continued to pressure Lindsey Wislon blocking three shots to keep the score 2-0 in the 70'. White added a pair of saves in the closing minutes to preserve the clean sheet and victory.
The Patriots will return to the pitch Thursday, October 1
st, when they travel to Campbellsville, KY to face the (RV) Tigers. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
