Patriots Earn 1-1 Draw in Top-Five Matchup

Marion, IN – In a top-five match-up, a late goal from Laura Bosca gave the top-ranked Patriots women's soccer team a 1-1 draw against fifth-ranked Indiana Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at the IWU Soccer Field. Cumberlands moves to 2-0-2 on the year, while the Wildcats move to 5-0-1.

It was Bosca first goal of the season as she also has a team-best four points, while Nicole Araujo tallied an assist.  The Patriots defense limited Indiana Wesleyan to just four shots on frame as Morgan White made three saves in the match.

The Patriots looked to strike first with a corner kick from Samantha Sokolove that was unable to be converted. The Wildcats quickly answered by crossing the ball in the box and netting a goal putting them on the board first in the 6'. For the next 17 minutes, shots were exchanged on both ends of the pitch with Juliette Charriez playing strong defense, blocking an IWU shot keeping the score at 1-0. A few minutes later, Laura Bosca fired a shot that deflected off the crossbar. White continued to anchor the Patriots defense making two saves in the span of one-minute to prevent the Wildcats from extending their lead. IWU tallied a trio of shots in the closing minutes of the half, however, strong defense by the Patriots kept the score 1-0 at the break.

The Pats turned up the intensity in the second half, tallying a pair of shots, one deflected off the post and the other was saved, within the first minute play. The Wildcats refused to backdown as they match Cumberlands intensity taking three shots that were off the mark. Possession shifted back and forth as both defense worked to limit dangerous chances. The Patriots nearly evened the score in the 62' when Vlada Milovic connected on a header, but the attempt went just over the crossbar. UC continued to apply pressure, and in the 75', Nicole Araujo sent a cross into the box finding Bosca, who finished for the equalizer. Cumberlands continued to create opportunities, with Letizia Traversone and Bosca putting a shot on frame, however, a pair of saves from the Wildcats kept the score even. Indiana Wesleyan had a few late chances, but the Patriots' defense held strong as neither team could find a go-ahead goal, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

Cumberlands returns to the pitch Thursday, September 10th, when they host St. Thomas.  Gametime is set for 7 p.m. with live video available here.
