Daniel Cotter is entering his sixth season on the Patriot football coaching staff. Cotter currently serves as the Wide Receivers Coach and Special Teams Coordinator for the Patriots. During the 2016 season, Cotter helped tutor Wide Receiver Weston Hayes, who was voted 1st team All Mid-South Conference as both a Wide Receiver and Return Specialist. From 2012-2015, Cotter coached on the defensive side of the ball in various positions. During the 2014 and 2015 seasons, Cotter coached Defensive Backs at UC, helping Safeties Erico Smith and Jamaria Patterson garner All Mid-South Conference Honors. In 2013 Cotter coached the Defensive Line and assisted with the Special Teams for the Patriots. Under his guidance, the defensive front registered 43 sacks and helped the Patriots finish in the top 20 in overall defense in the NAIA. In 2013, Cumberlands finished 13-1 with a Mid-South Conference championship and a first ever appearance in the NAIA National Championship game. Cotter also coached defensive lineman Nick Smith, who was voted as a 1st team Mid-South Conference member, as well as a VSN honorable mention All-American selection.
In 2012, Cotter served as a graduate assistant where he coached the Outside Linebackers and assisted with Special Teams. Cumberlands finished the 2012 campaign with a 10-2 record and appeared in the NAIA National Quarterfinals.
Cotter graduated from the University of the Cumberlands in the spring of 2013 with a degree in Special Education. As a player for the Patriots, Cotter experienced a great deal of success over his collegiate career while playing on 3 Mid-South Conference East/West Division championship teams. Cotter was also voted as an All Mid-South Conference Honorable Mention Defensive Back for the 2010 and 2011 seasons, and holds two single game punt return records for the Patriots.
Cotter is a native of Sevierville, Tennessee where he was graduated from Sevier County High School. He currently resides in Williamsburg with his wife, Paige and son, Kycen.
