Phillip Wells

Phillip Wells just concluded his tenth season as an Assistant Coach for the University of the Cumberlands.

This season, Phillip transitioned to the offensive side of the ball and was the co-offensive coordinator and worked with the wide receivers.  The Patriots found success through the air as the receiving core made 152 grabs for 1,774 yards and 23 touchdowns.  The group was led by Brandon Stuckey, who scored seven touchdowns and was a MSC Second-Team All-Conference selection.

Prior to transition back to the offensive side of the ball, Wells served as the co-defensive coordinator alongside Stephen Wells.  That duo help lead the Patriots defense to five straight winning seasons, including two trips to the NAIA postseason.  Under their guidance 25 Patriots earned MSC All-Conference honors with Tyler Pendelton being named the MSC Defensive Player of the Year in 2019. 

Phillip previously served as a graduate assistant for the Patriots where he coached the Tight Ends and special teams in 2013, a year which set numerous school records. The Patriots not only finished with a school record 13-1, but also made their first appearance in the NAIA National Championship game.  He also helped guide UC to a number 1 national ranking for the first in school history.     

In 2014, Phillip became the Quarterbacks coach where he coached for 3 seasons. As quarterbacks Coach, Wells coached Adam Craig where he became a 1st Team All-MSC selection and also MCS player of the year in 2015. He also helped guide a tipple option rushing attack that averaged over 340 yards a game which was ranked 3rd in the country in 2015.

In 2017, Wells moved to the defensive side of the ball where he coached LB’s.  He helped lead the patriots’ defense which was ranked 3rd in the MSC.

Wells is a 2013 graduate of the Cumberlands, where he was graduated with a degree Exercise Sports Science and also Public Health.

While at Cumberlands, Wells played Quarterback (2009-2012) and helped lead the patriots to two Mid-South Conference Championship teams (2009-2010).

Wells is a native of Lafollette, Tennessee where he was graduated from Campbell County High School.

Wells resides in Corbin, Kentucky and attends First Baptist Church and is involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Wells is married to former Erin White of Williamsburg, Kentucky. She also is a graduate of UC and currently the assistant cheer coach for the patriots.
