Stephen Wells

Stephen Wells enters his tenth season as an Assistant Coach for the University of the Cumberlands.

Stephen just concluded his fourth season as the Co-Defensive Coordinator for the Patriots.  He has helped led the Patriots defense to four straight winning seasons, including two trips to the NAIA postseason.  Under his guidance, 13 Patriots have earned MSC All-Conference honors with Tyler Pendelton being named the MSC Defensive Player of the Year in 2019. In 2021, UC defense had a trio of all-conference selections, including First Team All-Conference selection Kendall Adams Young.  This past season, Cumberlands forced 15 interceptions, which ranked 19th in the NAIA.

In 2017, Wells continued coaching defensive back and helped the patriots become the 3rd ranked defense in the MSC Appalachian Conference. He also coached 2nd Team All MSC selection Jay Woods.

In 2016, Wells moved back to the defensive side of the ball where he coach Defensive Backs.  He helped lead the patriots’ defense which was ranked 3rd in the MSC. While coaching defensive backs he coached 2nd Team All-MSC selections Jaelon Benjamin and Jeramiah Baker. 

In 2014, Stephen became the Running Backs coach where he coached for two seasons. As Running backs Coach, Wells coached Seph Buke to become a 1st Team All-MSC selection in 2015. He also help guide the patriots rushing attack that averaged over 340 yards a game which was ranked 3rd in the country.

Stephen previously served as a graduate assistant for the Patriots where he coached the Outside Linebackers in 2013, a year which set all kinds of school records. The Patriots not only finished a school record 13-1, but also made the first appearance to the NAIA National Championship game.  He also helped guide UC to a number 1 national ranking for the first time ever.     

He is a 2013 graduate of the Cumberlands, where he was graduated with a degree in Education with an emphasis in Special Ed and Social Studies.

While at Cumberlands, Wells played defensive back from (2009-2012) and helped lead the patriots to two Mid-South Conference Championship teams (2009-2010).

Wells is a native of Lafollette, Tennessee where he was graduated from Campbell County High School. Wells resides in Williamsburg and attends Main Street Baptist Church and is involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Wells is married to former Kristen Moran of Barbourville, KY.
