John Newbery is finished his fifth season as an assistant coach with the University of the Cumberlands soccer program in 2019. Newberry works with goalkeepers as well as assists in recruiting.
In his five years as assistant coach with the women's team, the Patriots have played to a 57-30-8 (21-10-5 Mid-South Conference) record, including a 2-5 mark in MSC Tournament play. Newberry began coaching the men's keepers in 2019, helping them to a 10-7-2 overall record, 5-3 in MSC play.
Under his tutelage, Newberry saw his keepers note 17 shutout wins between both programs in 2019. Over his Patriots tenure, his players have amassed 49 clean sheets, collected 446 saves (3.912 per game), and allowed 144 goals (1.25 GAA).
Prior to UC, while living in Washington state, Coach Newberry served as an assistant and goalkeeper coach for the Trinity Lutheran College Men’s and Northwest University Women’s Soccer programs.
As a goalkeeper, John played at the college, semi-pro, and professional level. In his four years of collegiate play at the University of the Cumberlands, he was a part of a team that was consistently in the top 25 for the NAIA and ended his junior and senior year ranked nationally in the top 15. John played semi-pro in the PASL-Premier league (Snohomish Skyhawks) and professionally in the PASL-Pro (Tacoma Stars). John currently holds a USSF National "D" Coaching License.
Coach Newberry is originally from Westport, KY where he was graduated from North Oldham High School. John attended and graduated from the University of the Cumberlands in 2009 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. In the past three years at UC, John has completed his Master of Arts in Christian Studies and Masters of Arts in Education (Secondary Biology).
Coach Newberry has been married to Kaitlyn Newbery for three years and they welcomed their first child, Evangeline, in July.
