Volleyball Swept By #17 Georgetown

Georgetown, KY – UC Volleyball suffered a three set defeat to the 17th-ranked Tigers of Georgetown College. The Tigers took the MSC win by scores of 25-18, 25-21, 25-18. After the win Georgetown improves to 14-2 overall and 9-2 in conference, Cumberlands drops to 11-14 on the year and 4-6 in the MSC.

In the first set, the Patriots went up 3-2 just before Georgetown scored six straight for an 8-3 lead. Cumberlands managed to shorten the lead 11-9, but the Tigers increased their lead to 18-12. UC then took the next six of eight to come within two of Georgetown at 20-18. However, the Tigers won the next five points for the 25-18 first set win.

The second set went back and forth as Georgetown took a 6-4 lead then UC tied it up at 6-6, the Tigers then regained control at 9-7. After Georgetown extended the lead to 11-8, the Patriots tied it at 11-11. Cumberlands forced a tie three more times before stealing the lead at 19-18. UC held control until 21-20 when Georgetown scored five straight to win the second set 25-21.

After four ties started the third set, Cumberlands held a 6-5 lead. Georgetown then stole the lead at 8-6 and pushed it further to 14-8. The Patriots brought it close at 14-11 just before the Tigers took three points for a 17-11 lead. After Georgetown went ahead 20-13, UC was able to shrink the deficit to 20-17. From there, the Tigers took five of the next six points for the 25-18 set and match win.

Abbie Genders, Megan Jackson, Mackenzie Koch, and Jessica Severs each earned six kills in the match. Jackson also tallied two solo blocks and an assisted block, while Lynsey Short notched 25 assists. Tara Routliffe gathered 16 digs and two service aces. Short, Jackson, and Megan Willoughby recorded a service ace apiece.

The Patriots will travel to Campbellsville, KY, for a MSC match on Thursday, October 9, against the Tigers of Campbellsville University. In the previous match between the two on September 5, the Tigers won 3-1 over UC. First serve on Thursday is set for 7 p.m.
