Randez Scores Twice to Lead Patriots to 2-0 Win over #23 Lindsey Wilson

Columbia, KY – Sara Randez netted a pair of goals, while Christie Funk recorded three saves to lead the UC Women's Soccer Team to a 2-0 win over Lindsey Wilson in Mid-South Conference play Friday night Walter S. Reuling Stadium. The win marks Cumberlands first victory over the Blue Raiders since October 8, 1999 and their first shutout against Lindsey Wilson since October 30, 1998.

The two teams began the contest trading corner kicks within the first seven minutes.  Cumberlands (7-7-1; 3-2-1 MSC) looked to take the early lead as Alexis Dreier fired a shot towards the net, but Jovana Ivanovic was there for the save to keep the game scoreless with 36:32 remaining in the first half.  Lindsey Wilson (6-5-3; 4-2 MSC) recorded six shots, one of which was on frame and saved by Funk, over the course of the next 30 minutes to keep the game scoreless.  Minutes later, Randez's shot connected with the back of the net to give Cumberlands a 1-0 with 3:40 remaining.  The Blue Raiders looked to even the score before half but Funk saved an Emma Gustafsson shot to preserve UC's 1-0 lead at the break.

The two teams continued to trade possession over the course of the second half.  Funk recorded her final save of the contest in the 50' minute.  The score remained 1-0 until the 58' minute when Randez netted an insurance goal and extend the Patriots lead to 2-0.  The Blue Raiders outshot the Patriots 6-1 over the final 32 minutes, but none of those seven shots were on frame as Cumberlands preserved the 2-0 final.

Leading the way for the Patriots was Randez, who tallied her first career multi-goal game and a career-high four points.  Cumberlands backline of Erin Bolas, Shannon Glendinning, Mackenzie Novak, and Rachel Palazzo limited the Blue Raiders to three shots on goal in the contest.  Funk recorded her third shutout of the season and the 11th clean slate of her career.

The Patriots will return to action Tuesday, October 25, when they host Tennessee Wesleyan in non-conference action.  The game is slated for 6 p.m. at the UC Soccer Complex and live video is available here, while live stats are available here.
