Williamsburg, KY – Senior
Erin Bolas netted a goal on senior night but it wasn't enough as the Patriots fell to Georgetown 2-1 in their regular season finale Saturday night at the UC Soccer Complex. With the win the Tigers improve to 9-5-2 and 4-2-1 in the Mid-South Conference, while the Patriots fall to 7-9-1 and 3-3-1 in conference play.
The Patriots looked to strike first as
Alexis Dreier recorded the first shot of the game, but it sailed high. Less than a minute later the Tigers' Jodi DeJohn put a shot on frame, which was saved by
Christie Funk. UC continued to push the ball as the Patriots recorded three shots on frame over the course of seven minutes, however Megan Martin made three of her six saves to keep the game scoreless with 33:49 remaining in the first half. The game remained scoreless until the 18' minute as Lindsey Dunn put a well-placed shot into the top left corner of the goal to give Georgetown a 1-0 lead. Cumberlands looked for a quick answer as
Mackenzie Novak centered the ball to
Sara Randez, who made a couple moves before finding Bolas in the box for a goal to even the game at 1-1 with 19:43 remaining. Both teams each recorded a shot on goal in the final minutes of the half, but neither could convert keeping the score tied 1-1 at the break.
Cumberlands looked to take the lead three minutes into the second half as
Jody LeMaster fired a shot towards the net, but Martin was there for the save. Less than a minute later Funk deflected a DeJohn shot, before Novak blocked a Bethany Massey shot to keep the game tied. Georgetown looked to retake the lead in the 58' minute as Dunn sent another lob shot towards the goal, but that one deflected off the crossbar and the Patriots backline was able to clear it. Two minutes later the Patriots defense stepped up once again, this time
Alexis Dreier made the team save to keep the game even. The score remained 1-1 until the 62' minute when Massey sent a corner kick into the box and Emily Conner netted the goal to give Georgetown a 2-1 lead. Randez tallied a pair of shots looking for the equalizer but couldn't convert either of them keep the score 2-1 with 10:26 remaining. It looked as though the Patriots found the equalizer in the 87' minute as Randez sent a free kick into the box to Bolas for a goal, but an offside call negated the goal for the 2-1 final.
Leading the way for the Patriots was Bolas, who tallied her second goal of the season. Funk finished with a game-high nine saves. That is second most saves Funk has recorded in game this season, only behind her 19 save performance against George Gwinnett.
The Patriots earned the fifth-seed in the upcoming Mid-South Conference and will face Campbellsville, who lost the tiebreaker to Georgetown, in the quarterfinals. That game is slated for 12 p.m. on Friday, November 3, at Warren Central High School in Bowling Green, KY.
