Patriots Earn First Conference Win Defeating Pikeville 2-0

Pikeville, KY - The University of the Cumberlands Men's Soccer team earned their first Mid-South Conference win on the road as they defeated Pikeville 2-0 on Tuesday evening at the Bob Amos Complex.  The shutout by the Patriots is their second of the season and improved their record to 5-3-3 and 1-1 in conference play, while UPike falls to 2-7-1 and 0-2 in conference play.
 
UC started off hot getting a goal in the fifth minute by Aleksa Blagojevic with the assist coming from Miguel Alvarez to put Cumberlands up 1-0.  The Bears would try to tie up the game in the 20' minute of play with a shot by Aaron Aven, but Ahmed Ghatwary would record his first of two saves in the span of four minutes.  Later in the first half, the Patriots fired off three shots all with in the span of two minutes but all were saved by Pikeville's Anibal Navarro.  Ghatwary recorded his final save of the half in the 42' minute to keep UC's lead at 1-0 going into half.
 
The Patriots maintained momentum in the second half with another goal by Blagojevic in the 61' minute to give them the 2-0 lead. Cumberlands looked to extend their lead as they recorded four shots on goals but Anibal Navarro made four of his game-high six saves to keep the Patriots out of the net. Ghatwary recorded his final save at the 85' minute to give him four saves on the night and secure the 2-0 win.
 
Leading the way for UC was Blagojevic, who netted a career-high two goals. Alvarez dished out his first assist of the season, while Ghatwary tallied his ninth career shutout.
 
The Patriots will return to action Friday, October 6, when they host MSC foe Life at the UC Soccer Complex. The game is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. and live video is available here, while live stats are available here.
