Patriots Record Third Shutout of Season Defeating Life 1-0

Williamsburg, KY - The University of the Cumberlands men's soccer team defeated Life University 1-0 on Friday night at the UC Soccer Complex. With the win the Patriots improve to 2-1 in conference play and 6-3-3 overall, while the Running Eagles fall to 2-1 in conference and 7-5 overall.

Cumberlands and Life battled it out through out the entire game with each team getting their fair share of possession. The Eagles were the first to get shots on goal in the 22' and 23' minute both of which were saved by Ahmed Ghatwary. It gave Ghatwary two of his three saves in the first half. Life's Ricardo Lawrence would try to put the Eagles up again in the 28' minute, but Ghatwary would be there to make the save. The Patriots looked to take the lead in the 38' minute as Joel Caldwell hit a header into the hands of the Running Eagles keeper Daryoush Hosseini.  Max Aken-Tyers look for a score in the 43' but his shot sailed over the net keeping the game scoreless at the break.

The Patriots controlled the ball in their attacking zone to begin the second half as Zach Wallace and Caldwell each tallied a shot.  The game remained scoreless until the 60' minute when Aleksa Blagojevic found Caldwell, who kicked it clear across the goal just inside the top right corner of the net to give UC the 1-0 lead. Life was looking for the equalizer later in the game but Ghatwary recorded a pair of saves to keep the Running Eagles off the board. The Running Eagles' best opportunity came in the 88' minute as Marek Beno got behind the defensive but his shot sailed over the goal. Thirty seconds later, Blagojevic tried to net a goal of his own to give the Patriots the cushion but Hosseini was there to make the save for the 1-0 final.

With the win Ghatwary recorded his third shutout of the season and tenth of his career. Caldwell notched his third goal of the season and each of his three goals gave the Patriots the lead.

The Patriots will return to action on Tuesday, October 10 as they travel to Union College to face the Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m.
