Pikeville, KY – Jody LeMaster netted her second hat trick of the season to lead the University of the Cumberlands Women's Soccer Team to a 4-0 win over Pikeville in Mid-South Conference play, Tuesday afternoon at Bob Amos Soccer Complex. With the win the Patriots improve to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in the MSC, while the Bears fall to 0-10 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
The Patriots looked to jump out to an early lead as UC recorded three shots in the first 15 minutes of play but couldn't convert. Five minutes later
Shannon Glendinning fired a shot towards the goal, which was saved by Bryanna Schroers to keep the game scoreless. The game remained that way until the 24
th minute when
Mackenzie Novak connected with
Jody LeMaster for a goal to give Cumberlands a 1-0 lead. Pikeville looked for the equalizer but wasn't able to convert as
Christie Funk made her lone save of the game. With the clock winding down in the first half, LeMaster netted an unassisted goal to extend UC's lead to 2-0 at the break.
Cumberlands carried the momentum into the second half and outshot Pikeville 10-0. Offensively,
Emily Willoughby put a shot on frame two minutes into the period, which was saved by Schroers. The score remained 2-0 until the 58
th minute when LeMaster put a well-placed shot into the back of the net for a goal to give Cumberlands a 3-0 lead. Just over a minute later,
Sara Randez sent a cross into the box for
Erin Bolas, who one-touched it to
Shelby Little for the goal to give the Patriots a 4-0 lead with 30:23 remaining. UC took the final four shots of the game, only one of which was on goal and saved by Pikeville for the 4-0 final.
Leading the way for the Patriots was LeMaster, who recorded her third career hat trick. LeMaster now has a season-high ten goals. Little tallied her first goal since the season opener, while Bolas, Randez, and Novak each dished out an assist. The Patriots backline of Bolas,
Rachel Palazzo,
Sage Hunley, and Glendinning limited the Bears to just four shots in the game, while Funk and Moses combined for UC fourth shutout of the year.
The Patriots will return to action Friday, October 6, when they host MSC foe Life at the UC Soccer Complex. The game is slated to begin at 5 p.m. and live video is available
