Patriots Earn 3rd Straight Win Defeating Webber International in OT

Williamsburg, KY – Five Patriots scored in double figures as Alani Fisher scored five of the team's ten points in overtime to push UC to an 80-77 win over Webber International University on Saturday. Fisher tallied four threes in the contest along with two big free throws late to ice the game for the Patriots. The win, moving UC to 3-1 overall on the season, is the third straight for the ladies since dropping their season opener against Milligan.

UC looked solid early, especially Megan Morton who was scored eight of UC's first ten points in their 10-3 run to start the game. UC would go up as much as ten in the first quarter, but the Warriors would battle back to make it 23-22 at the end of the first frame.

In the second, Webber took their first lead of the contest and held it for much of the quarter, even extending their lead to seven with just over two minutes to play in the half. With the score 34-27 Warriors, UC would get seven big points from Kayla Bruner along with a trey from Callia Cropp to take a 37-36 lead at the break.

Both teams would take leads in the third quarter as neither team could truly pull away from one another. UC would snag a three-point lead early after another basket by Bruner, but the Warriors would come up with some big breaks, pushing their largest lead of the quarter out to four at 46-42 with just over five minutes to play. UC would rally back and tie the game at 53 entering the fourth.

There, the Warriors would control the first five minutes of the period, jumping out on a 9-2 run to lead UC 62-55 with 6:41 to play. The Patriots would answer in the form of Alani Fisher, who drained three straight from behind the arc to retake the lead for UC 64-62. There, the teams would trade baskets until the Warriors would take a 70-68 lead with 1:50 to play. After several empty possessions for both teams, it was Cheyenne Madden coming up like a clutch senior would and drained a tying basket with ten seconds remaining, sending the game to overtime.

Webber International scored the first four points of the overtime period, but two free throws from Shayla Simpson and a basket by Brandi Williams would make it 75-74 Warriors with two minutes to play. Another key three pointer by Fisher would come with just over a minute to play, giving the Patriots a 77-75 lead. Two Warrior free throws from Shayla McPhearson would tie the game, but a back-end free throw from Callia Cropp along with two from Fisher with three seconds remaining was enough for UC to hold on for an 80-77 win.

Five Patriots scored in double figures led by Fisher with 16 points (4-9 3PT), three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Madden earned her second double-double of the season with 15 points and ten rebounds. Bruner added 13 points, five assists, and three rebounds. Morton pitched in 11 points of her own while Simpson booked ten points and five rebounds as well as a season and career high six blocks.

UC shot 42.6% from the field and 65% from the charity stripe. The Patriots also had 28 points in the paint, 27 bench points, and 20 points coming off 22 Warrior turnovers. Webber would shoot 36.6% from the floor in the game. They would have 39 points scored from their bench along with 27 points off turnovers.

The Patriots return to action on Friday, November 17th as they travel to Denmark, South Carolina as they take on Voorhees College for the first of back-to-back games on the weekend. Tip-off is set for 5 pm.
