Williamsburg, KY – After taking a commanding lead at halftime, it would take a late game stand as the UC Women's Basketball team would earn their sixth straight victory on Saturday defeating the Bearcats of Brescia University 62-54. With the win, the Patriot ladies move to 6-1 overall on the season.
The first quarter was evenly matched as the teams would trade the lead several times. UC's
Jasmine Rhodes and
Callia Cropp would score the final six points of the quarter for the Patriots as they would carry a slim 16-12 lead into the second. There, it was the Patriots showing domination of their opposition. The UC defense was swarming, challenging nearly every shot as Brescia went 0-12 from the field in the quarter, including 0-7 from three-point range, as they tallied just two points from the free throw line. The Patriots however were the opposite, sinking half of their attempts in the quarter (7-14 FG) as they would blow the lead wide open to 32-14 at the break.
In the third, the Bearcats would show they were successful in making some halftime adjustments. Brescia would nearly double-up the Patriots in the third 27-14, including shooting 60% from the field (4-5 3 PT) to make it just a five-point lead for UC 46-41 entering the final period of play. There, UC would make a stand, hitting 5-9 from the charity stripe in the frame as
Cheyenne Madden would score eight of her game-high 25 in the quarter to send UC to their sixth straight win, earning the eight-point win over Brescia.
Madden led the way with 25 points along with seven rebounds and four assists.
Kayla Bruner battled foul trouble throughout the contest as she would score 10 points to go with nine rebounds and three assists.
Shayla Simpson and
Callia Cropp both added eight points for the Patriots in the win.
UC would shoot 41.5% from the field in the victory along with 73.7% from the free throw stripe. Brescia would be plagued as their shooting from behind the arc was off today, going just 4-22 from deep while shooting just 28.3% from the floor.
The Patriots return to action on Thursday, November 30
th as they travel to Nashville, Tennessee to take on Fisk University. Tip-off for that contest is set for 6 pm.
