Williamsburg, KY – After falling behind at the half, the UC Women's Basketball team would battle back to give themselves an opportunity late to win their final game of the 2017 season at Point Park University. After tying the game on a hoop and harm by
Cheyenne Madden, UC's defense would hold the Pioneers and would get an opportunity with 2.2 seconds remaining and the game tied at 66. UC would look to their hot hand as Madden would corral the inbound pass and hit a game winning bank shot from the post as time expired to give the Patriots a 68-66 win over the Pioneers, moving their overall record to 10-2 on the season.
In the opening quarter, the Patriots opened up a 6-3 lead early, but a 6-0 run quickly gave Point Park a three point advantage. A pair of threes off the bench from
Megan Morton though would give the Patriots back the lead at 12-9. A number of fouls from UC would send the Pioneers to the line often in the quarter, where they went a perfect 6-6, but the Patriots would respond going 4-9 from beyond the arc to take a 20-13 lead at the end of the quarter. In the second, Point Park would get their offense going strong while UC's shooting would turn cold. The Pioneers outscored the Patriots 19-9 in the frame to take a 32-29 lead at the half.
In the second half, UC started off on an 8-2 run to retake the lead 37-34. There, the teams would trade baskets nearly the rest of the quarter as the score would be tied at 46 entering the final period of play. Back and forth, both teams would take leads in the fourth as it was 57-57 with just under four minutes to play. There, PPU would pull away and take a five point lead at 64-59 with under a minute to play. Baskets by both Madden and
Jasmine Rhodes would bring it to 64-63 with 12 seconds to play.
The Pioneers would get two free throws to make it 66-63, but UC would respond. Madden would take the inbound off the timeout and score a basket while being fouled, sending her to the line to tie the game with her third free throw of the game. After an empty possession by PPU gave UC the ball with 2.2 seconds, Coach
Melissa Irvin would call another timeout to advance the ball up the floor. There,
Megan Morton's pass would be tipped but brought down by Madden who put up a great look from the block that would rattle in as time expired to give the Patriots their third straight victory and tenth win of the season.
Madden finished the game with a season high 27 points to go along with six rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Rhodes added 12 points and nine rebounds in the win while Morton would chip in 11 points on 3-4 shooting from deep. The Patriots shot 43.3% from the field while outrebounding Point Park 40-27. UC also outscored PPU in the paint 36-20 and on second chance opportunities 15-2.
UC now has some time off for the holidays but will return to action just after the New Year on January 2
nd as they travel to Owensboro, Kentucky to take on Brescia University. Tip-off for that contest is set for 6 pm.
