Williamsburg, KY – The UC men's basketball team used a 16-0 run late in the first half to pull away for a 92-77 win over Miami Hamilton Thursday night at the O. Wayne Rollins Center. With the win the Patriots improve to 9-2, while the Harriers drop to 5-8.
MUH hit the first three field goals of the game to jump out to a 6-2 lead two minutes into the contest.
Travon Labranche and
Malik Colvin-Seldon hit back-to-back jumpers to even the score. A minute later Colvin-Seldon converted an old-fashion three-point play to give the Patriots their first lead of the game with 15:59 remaining. The Harriers scored eight unanswered points before
Anthony Eaves responded with six straight points to cut the deficit to 16-15 with 13:07 left in the first half. Both teams tallied eight points over the next five minutes, before
Will Gary's jump put UC ahead 25-24 with 8:09 left. After the lead changed four times in a three minute span, Cumberlands went on a 16-0 run to take a 43-30 lead with just over a minute remaining. MUH was able to cut the lead to 45-33 at the break.
Bernard Samuel began the second half scoring seven of UC's first nine points to extend their lead to 17 2:26 in. Minutes later, Colvin-Seldon hit back-to-back field goals to give the Patriots a 60-41 lead with 14:31 remaining. The two teams continued to battle as Labranche stole the ball and made a layup to extend Cumberlands lead to 21 points, their largest lead of the contest. The Harriers went on a 15-5 run, over a four-minute span, to cut the lead to 69-58 midway through the second half. MUH cut the lead to nine points before Duncan drained a three-pointer to put UC ahead 75-63 with 7:21 remaining. The teams traded buckets over the next several minutes before Colvin-Seldon grabbed an offensive rebound and put it home and convert the three-point play to give Cumberlands an 86-72 advantage with two minutes left. UC outscored MUH 6-5 over the final two minutes for the 92-77 final.
Leading the way for the Patriots was Colven-Seldon and Gary, who each netted a career-high. Colvin-Seldon finished with 35 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks, while Gary recorded 17 points and tied a career-high with six rebounds and six assists. Duncan tallied 13 points, while Eaves chipped in 11.
Colven-Seldon becomes the first Patriots since 1970 to record back-to-back 30+ point game. The last time it happen Bob Long scored 35 points against Union on 2/26/70 and 38 points against Kentucky State on 3/2/70.
The Patriots will return to the court Saturday, December 9, when they travel to New Albany, IN to face Indiana University Southeast, who is ranked 25
th in NAIA Division II. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m.
