Williamsburg, KY – After a slow start to the game, the Patriots would put together a 45-6 run over a 24 minute span to pull away and cruise to a 62-24 win over the Cougars of Carver College on Friday night. The win pushes the Patriots to 8-2 overall on the season.
In the first quarter, UC would begin the game sluggish. Going 5-15 from the floor in the opening period, UC would hold just an 11-8 lead after ten minutes of play. Carver tied the game at 2:05 remaining in the quarter. The second was better for the Patriots, especially defensively. UC would not allow a basket from the floor in the second quarter for Carver. The Patriots would jump out to a 15-3 run that began in the first quarter as they led 23-11 at the half.
In the third, UC started the half strong with 17 straight points. With 4:19 to play in the quarter,
Cheyenne Madden would drain another basket, but this one was special as it made her the 25
th player in UC women's basketball history to join the 1,000 career points club. The 17 points extended UC's run to 32-3, to take a 40-11 lead with 3:22 to play in the period. Carver would score their only field goal of the quarter at that mark, plus one free throw, at that point of the quarter. The Patriots would continue their run throughout the rest of the quarter, adding nine more points to take a 49-14 lead into the final ten minutes of play.
In the fourth, it was more of a back-and-forth matchup between the two teams, but UC would extend their lead yet again as all 11 Patriots that played scored in the contest in route to the 38 point victory over the Cougars 62-24.
Madden would lead the way with her fifth double-double of the season netting 19 points and securing 13 rebounds along with four steals, two assists, and a block.
Shayla Simpson added 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a steal in the win. The trio of
Jasmine Rhodes,
Jada Johnson, and
Alani Fisher all pitched in five points each.
UC shot 37.7% from the field in the contest while holding Carver to just 8-52 from the floor for 15.4%. The Patriots also forced 23 turnovers on the night while tallying 22 points off turnovers, 23 bench points, and 14 second chance points.
The Patriot ladies return to the O. Wayne Rollins Center on Sunday, December 10
th for another non-conference game. They will host the Tigers of Voorhees College for a 2 pm tip-off. UC was successful earlier this season against Voorhees, coming away with a 53-42 win.
