Athens, TN – Patriots' volleyball picked up their third straight win in a 3-0 sweep over the Bulldogs of Tennessee Wesleyan on Friday. Cumberlands dominated the match by winning 25-11, 25-20, 25-20. This win improves UC to 3-2 on the year as the Bulldogs fall to 0-5.

In the first set, the score was a back-and-forth exchange until the Patriots had a nine-point run to jump ahead 11-3. The Bulldogs attempted to muster a comeback as UC held a 14-7 lead. However the Patriots continued to dominate TN Wesleyan and win the first set 25-11.

The second set started with the Patriots' holding a 3-1 lead, but the Bulldogs bounced back with a five-point run to take the lead 6-3. UC tied it up at 6-6, but again TN Wesleyan jumped back ahead 8-6. Each team exchanged the lead with the Patriots taking the final go ahead lead at 13-10. The Bulldogs would bring the score close at 14-13, but UC continued to control the set and go on to win 25-20.

Cumberlands had a seven point streak to start the third set with a 7-0 lead. The Bulldogs slowly chipped away at the seven point deficit throughout the set to tie up the score at 19-19. The Patriots wouldn't back down and continued on to victory as they gathered the last six of seven points to win the set and match 25-20.

Leading the Patriots offensively was Jessica Severs with 15 digs and nine kills paired with an assist in the match. Newcomer Abbie Genders also had a top notch performance as she chipped in eight kills and three digs with a solo block. Tara Routliffe led the team in digs at 17. Lynsey Short tallied 15 digs of her own while leading in assists with 29 as Routliffe recorded four assists of her own. Megan Willoughby earned three aces while Jennifer Stein earned two. Mackenzie Koch noted two solo blocks in the match.

UC volleyball will return to the court on Tuesday, August 29 to take on the Lions of Bryan College for their first home match of the season. The Patriots will be looking to avenge last season's 3-0 loss to the Lions. First serve is set for 6 pm.
