Patriots Tame the Lions 3-0 in Home Opener

Williamsburg, KY – The UC Volleyball team dominated the Lions of Bryan College in their home opener on Tuesday at the UC Volleyball Gym. The Patriots swept the match 3-0 by set scores of 25-15, 25-13, 25-21. Cumberlands improves their record 4-2 while the Lions fall to 1-4.

The first set started as a battle for the lead with UC prevailing as they went on seven point terror paired with back-to-back aces by Jen Stein, allowing the Patriots a 9-3 lead. Bryan mustered a short rally, but the Patriots put up a rally of their own to move their lead to 17-10. The Lions wouldn't be able to come back from the deficit as Cumberlands continued on to win the first set 25-15.

In the second set, UC jumped ahead quickly with Megan Willoughby gathering two back-to-back aces of her own as the Patriots took a 4-0 lead and never looked back. The Lions brought the score close at 9-7, however UC used a four point run to extend their lead to 13-7. Cumberlands continued to dominate the match and go on to take the second set 25-13.

The third set began in the Lions favor but turned into a back-and-forth battle for the lead with the Patriots piecing together five points for an 11-6 lead. Bryan rallied back to tie the match at 12-12, again UC took back their lead at 15-12. Following the trend, the Lions tied it back at 15-15 but again the Patriots rallied for a 17-15 lead. UC looked to pull away from Bryan, however the Lions managed to tie up the score again at 19-19. The Patriots used a 6-2 run to win the set 25-21 and clinch the match.

Jessica Severs led the Patriots offense while gathering her first double-double in the season. Severs notched 13 kills, 13 digs, and an ace. Abbie Genders chipped in with ten digs of her own as well as an assisted block and an assist. Lynsey Short tallied an impressive 38 assists. Jennifer Stein earned three aces in the match while Megan Willoughby and Tara Routliffe each earned two of their own. Routliffe also headed the defense with 25 digs as Willoughby contributed 11 and Stein gathered ten. Mackenzie Koch and Megan Jackson led UC in blocks with three apiece, Koch had two solo and one assisted while Jackson had two assisted and one solo. Genders, Short, and Willoughby also earned an assisted block each.

The Patriots will be back on the court on August 31 in Wilmore, KY for a match against the Eagles of Asbury College. UC took the win last season over the Eagles 3-0. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
