Williamsburg, KY – The Patriots suffered a tough loss on Friday to the Running Eagles of Life University. The Running Eagles won the Mid-South Conference match in three straight sets (25-19, 25-22, 25-19). Life improves to 13-2 overall and 1-0 in the MSC as UC falls to 5-5 overall with a 0-2 conference record.
The first set began in Life's favor as they jumped ahead 10-4 and continued to push ahead 19-14. UC mustered a short rally, but the Running Eagles continued on to win the set 25-19. In the second set, Life took the lead from the start and moved ahead 17-13. The Patriots rallied back to tie the set at 19-19. The Running Eagles would take back the lead at 20-19, however UC would score three straight points to take over the lead at 22-20. Life would again take control with five points and win the set 25-22.
Cumberlands jumped ahead early in the third set with a 3-1 lead. The Running Eagles would take over the lead at 5-4 then move ahead 9-5. The Patriots rallied to tie the score at 10-10, but again Life took back the lead at 12-10. UC rallied back to retake the lead at 14-12, just like before Life stole the lead 15-14. The Patriots worked back into a 16-16 tie, but the Running Eagles continued to hold the lead 19-16. UC was unable to come back from the deficit as Life went on to win the set 25-19.
Abbie Genders led the Patriots with eight kills while
Jessica Severs chipped in seven of her own.
Megan Willoughby and
Mackenzie Koch tallied six kills each. Koch recorded two blocks (one solo and one assisted), Genders contributed a solo assist of her own.
Lynsey Short earned 24 assists and three aces in the match.
Tara Routliffe notched 13 digs on the night.
UC will be back on the court Tuesday, September 19 for a MSC match against the Tigers of Georgetown College in Williamsburg, KY. First serve is set for 7 pm.
