Patriots Sweep Phoenix 3-0

Lebanon, TN – UC Volleyball returned to MSC action on Tuesday against the Phoenix of Cumberland University. The Patriots took the win in three straight sets by scores of 25-14, 26-24, and 25-17. UC improves to 7-7 overall and 1-3 in conference while the Phoenix fall to 11-7 on the year and 2-2 in the MSC.

The Patriots jumped ahead early in the first set with a 6-3 lead but the Phoenix quickly closed the gap at 7-7. UC went on an eight point run to retake the lead at 15-7. Cumberland U attempted the rally, however Cumberlands continued to push ahead to 18-10 and went on to take the 25-14 win.

In the second set, the match was back-and-forth until UC broke a 4-4 tie five six straight points for a 9-4 lead. The Patriots continued on to extend the lead to 14-6, but the Phoenix battled to shorten the UC lead to 20-17. Cumberland U then continued the rally and took the lead 23-22, before the Patriots used a 4-1 run to win the set 26-24 and take a 2-0 lead.

The third set started with a quick 4-2 lead for UC, just like before the Phoenix tied up the match at 4-4. After several even scores, the Patriots went on a three point run to take a 9-6 lead. UC then increased the lead to 18-11, but Cumberland U used a six-point run to cut the lead to one point at 18-17. The Patriots responded by scoring seven straight points to win the set 25-17 and clinch the match, 3-0.

Mackenzie Koch led the offense with ten kills while Jessica Severs chipped in seven of her own. Lynsey Short recorded 26 assists in the match. Shorts, Severs, and Jennifer Stein each tallied two aces each. Tara Routliffe gathered 24 digs in the match. Abbie Genders had five blocks while Short earned three and Koch had two.

The Patriots will return to the court on Thursday, September 28 in Lebanon, TN for a MSC match against Lindsey Wilson. First serve is set for 7:30 pm.
