Montreat, NC – Truett McConnell's goal in the 87' minute proved to be the difference as the University of the Cumberlands Women's Soccer Team falls to the Bears 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Pulliam Stadium/Howard Fisher Memorial Field. With the win the Bears improve to 1-1-1 while the Patriots fall to 2-1.
Truett McConnell outshot the Patriots 4-1 in the first half, but
Christie Funk made two of her game-high six saves to keep the game scoreless at the break. Cumberlands recorded a pair of corner kicks in the opening period and their lone shot, which came off the foot of
Shelby Little, sailed wide.
The Bears started the second half by taking a pair of shots, both of which went wide. The Patriots best opportunity came in the 77
th minute as
Emily Willoughby sent a corner kick into the box for
Alexis Kingsley, but Ashlyn Walloch made the save for Truett McConnell to keep the game scoreless. Funk made three saves over the course of a five minute span to halt the Bears attack with 5:46 remaining in the game. The score remained that way until the 87' minute when Jessica Lanier scored an unassisted goal to give the Bears a 1-0 win. Ashlyn Walloch
This marks the second time this season that Funk as recorded six saves in a game. LeMaster led the Patriots offense with two shots.
The Patriots will return to action Monday, September 4, when they face Brewton-Parker in a neautral site game in Montreat, NC. The game is slated to begin at 11 a.m. and live video is available
