Lawrenceville, GA – Christie Funk recorded a career-high 19 saves but it wasn't enough as the University of the Cumberlands Women's Soccer Team fell to Georgia Gwinnett 5-0 Friday night at Grizzly Soccer Complex. With the win the Grizzles improve to 2-3 while the Patriots fall to 3-2.
Cumberlands looked to strike first but
Shelby Little's shot sailed over the net four minutes into the first half. The Patriots were forced into a defensive stance as Georgia Gwinnett outshot UC 16-0 over the last 40 minutes of the opening period. The game remained scoreless until the 25
th minute when Macarena Errazuriz headed a Bristol Countess' corner kick just under the crossbar for a goal. A Grizzlies' goal in the 44
th minute gave Georgia Gwinnett a 2-0 lead at the break. Funk made nine of her 19 saves in the first half.
It was a similar story in the second half as Georgia Gwinnett won the shot battle 20-1. Funk stopped five shots within the first 15 minutes of the second half to keep the score 2-0. Funk's 19 saves surpasses her previous career-high of 11, which was set on September 24, 2016 against Martin Methodist.
The Patriots will return to action Tuesday, September 12, when they face travel to Barbourville, KY to face Union. The game is slated to begin at 5 p.m. and live video is available
