Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Bo Kidd

Patriots’ Push Not Enough to Knock off Fourth-Ranked Shawnee State

Portsmouth, OH – The Patriot Women's Basketball team would look to shake off a tough mid-week loss on Saturday, but they knew it would be a tough task as they traveled north to take on the NAIA fourth-ranked Bears of Shawnee State University. The Bears would score six points quickly to take a lead they would not relinquish as they defeated Cumberlands by a final score of 77-53. The loss bumps the Patriots to 13-7 on the season and 2-5 in Mid-South Conference action.

The Bears would open the game on an 8-3 run in the first three minutes, but UC would crash the boards early to take down a top five opponent. After opening a 19-9 lead on the Patriots, UC would score the final five points of the quarter to bring the lead to five at 19-14. In the second, the teams would swap baskets early as the Bears would inch themselves out to a 25-18 lead. There, the Bears would go on a 9-2 run to widen the gap to 34-20 with under two minutes to play in the half. UC would cut into the lead a bit as Shawnee State led at the break 35-25.

In the third, the Bears would come out firing quickly on the Patriots. SSU would put together an 18-5 run in the first five minutes of the quarter to take a 53-30 lead, its largest lead of the game to that point. The Patriots would then outscore Shawnee the final five minutes 8-3 as the Bears led 56-38 with ten minutes to play.  In the fourth, the Patriots would see their most prolific offensive output, but it was not enough as the Bears would finish the game with a 24-point victory over UC.

Leading the way for the Patriots was Jasmine Rhodes with 16 points and seven rebounds. Shayla Simpson added 10 points and two rebounds for UC. Cumberlands shot 33.3% from the field and an impressive 16-21 from the charity stripe. UC was outrebounded though 31-26 while committing 24 turnovers, but the Patriots would also force 21 giveaways in the game.

The Patriot ladies return to action on Thursday, February 1st as they travel to take on the Running Eagles of Life University. Tipoff is set for 6 pm.
