Header from LeMaster Pushes Patriots Pass 15th-Ranked Grizzles

Williamsburg, KY – In the 88' minute of the game Jody LeMaster headed a corner kick from Alanna Skinner into the lower left corner to give the UC Women's Soccer Team 1-0 win against the 15th-ranked Georgia Gwinnett Grizzles Saturday night at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex. With the win the Patriots improve to 13-1-1 on the season, while the Grizzlies fall to 10-3.

From the opening whistle Gwinnett's offense took control taking a pair of shots and corner kicks in the first nine minutes, however the Patriots were able to keep them off the board with their strong defense. The Grizzles continued their strong offensive play but were unable to convert as Christie Funk tallied two saves and Emma Chambers blocked two shots to help keep the game scoreless. Jenna Rockwell recorded the Patriots first shot of the half in 40' minute but it went wide of the goal to keep the game scorless going into half.

After playing defense much of the first half, UC came out of the break with offense on their mind. Cumberlands fired two quick shots neither finding the back of the net. The Grizzles and the Patriots traded time of possession for most of the second half with each taking five shots however neither team able to convert. It looked like the Patriots struck first in the 82'  minute as a Skinner cornerkick found the back of the net, however the goal was negated as the ball went out of bounce prior to scoring.  From that point the momentum shifted in Cumberlands favor as six minutes later, Skinner placed a beautiful corner kick for LeMaster to head in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Georgia Gwinnett looked for the equalizer however the Patriots defense came up big one more time to secure the 1-0 victory.

Funk tallied five saves in the contest and notched the ninth shutout of the season. LeMaster scored in back-to-back games and with that goal moves into a tie for fourth all-time in program history in goals with Amanda Harber. Skinner picks up her tenth assist of the season. This win marks the third time in the past two years that the Patriots have defeated a team ranked in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll.

UC returns to action as they travel to take on MSC foe, Life University Eagles on Tuesday, October 16 kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
