Men’s Soccer Suffers 2-0 Setback Against Campbellsville

Williamsburg, KY – University of the Cumberlands men's soccer suffered a 2-0 setback against Campbellsville University in Mid-South Conference play on Saturday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex.

Cumberlands (7-4-2, 4-2-0 MSC) and Campbellsville (7-6-0, 4-2-0 MSC) each had 20 shots in the match and Cumberlands held a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. However, the Patriots were unable to convert on their chances and the Tigers made the most of their opportunities.

Neither team was able to get an offensive edge early in the match. A lot of the play was in the midfield without many great scoring chances. However, the Tigers scored the only goal of the first half in the 42' minute. Nathaniel Fonda received the ball from a teammate to the left of the 18-yard box. He made a move to his right to get a shooting angle around a Patriot defender and fired a shot that curved inside the far post. For the Patriots, Marvin van der Made had one of the best chances of the half as he headed a cross from Joel Drewery just high in the 38' minute.

After halftime, Patriot goalkeeper Clement May (6-4-2) made one of his best saves of the game in the 48minute when he dove to stop a shot and keep the deficit at 1-0. However, Campbellsville would score in the 57' minute to make the score 2-0. Troy Walters dribbled through the midfield and played a through ball ahead to Lucas Batistela. Batistela ran onto the pass in the 18-yard box and slid a shot past May.

Cumberlands had chances to score, but was unable to break through. Joel Caldwell took a shot that looked like it was headed for the inside of the post in the 61' minute, but a Campbellsville defender was there to clear the ball away. Then in the 71' minute, van der Made had a chance inside the 18-yard box, but his shot sailed high. Sergio Infantes also had s scoring opportunity in the 85' minute when he fired a shot towards the near post from about 25 yards out on the left side of the field. However, Owen Stott (6-4-0) made a diving stop for the Tigers. Time would run out on the Patriots as the match ended with the score 2-0.

May made five saves for Cumberlands, while Stott stopped eight shots for Campbellsville.

The Patriots conclude their regular season with a match against Cumberland University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24 at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex. Following the match, the Patriot seniors will be recognized on the field as part of Senior Day.
