Williamsburg, KY – University of the Cumberlands men's soccer played (RV) Cumberland University to a 1-1 double overtime draw in its Mid-South Conference regular-season finale on Wednesday night at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex.
Early on in the first half, the Patriots (7-4-3, 4-2-1 MSC) and the Phoenix (8-4-3, 6-0-1 MSC) battled in the midfield. Eventually, the Patriots started to get offensive chances. One of the best scoring chances was had by
Sergio Infantes. With under 20 minutes remaining in the half, he fired a shot from outside the top right of the 18-yard box. The ball was on a path towards the upper-left corner of the net but Bennet Strutz (8-4-3) made a leaping save for the Phoenix. The Patriots increased their offensive pressure later in the half and it paid off with the first goal of the match in the 40' minute.
Marvin van der Made drew a foul in the 18-yard box and
Filip Milivojevic converted the ensuing penalty kick as he scored into the lower-right corner. With the help of their defense and goalkeeper
Ahmed Ghatwary (1-0-1), who came out to stop multiple crosses in the period, the Patriots held the 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Phoenix took advantage of a corner kick to tie the match at 1-1 and the Patriots were unable to convert on their offensive chances. In the 53' minute, Martin Walsh took a corner kick for the Phoenix and Sondre Risa headed the ball from close range into the right side of the net. The Patriots had chances, including an opportunity by
Alejandro Gonzalez with just over one minute remaining in regulation. Gonzalez took a shot from inside the 18-yard box, but Strutz made a leaping save. Ghatwary also made a couple of key saves late in regulation, including a save on a shot from in close with under three minutes remaining to play. Neither team scored again as the match headed to overtime.
In the first overtime,
Joel Caldwell had a scoring opportunity for the Patriots as he took a shot with under four minutes remaining, but Strutz made the save. The Phoenix had one shot on goal in the period, but Ghatwary made the stop.
In the second overtime, the Patriots fired six shots but none were on goal.
Nicklas Nancke had a couple of shots of the Patriot attempts. The Phoenix also failed to put a shot on target as the match ended with a 1-1 draw.
The Patriots outshot the Phoenix 43-36, but the Pats were edged 16-15 in shots on goal.
Sergio Infantes led all players with eight shots on goal in the match.
Ghatwary and Strutz each made seven saves on the evening.
The Patriots return to action in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament on Friday, November 2 in Bowling Green, KY. UC will enter the tournament as the fourth seed.
