Patriots Earn 1-1 Draw in Battle of Ranked Teams

Williamsburg, KY – The 22nd-ranked UC women's team earned a 1-1 draw against the 15th-ranked Cumberland University Phoenix in their regular season finale Wednesday night at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex. With the draw the Patriots finish the regular season with 15-1-2 record including 5-0-2 against the MSC and earned at least the second-seed in the upcoming MSC Tournament.

Cumberland came out hard from the opening whistle looking to get on the board early but were unsuccessful with both shots. The Patriots fired off five quality shots, however could not find the back of the net for the opening goal. The two teams battled for possession and shots over the next 10 minutes, until the Phoenix's Rebecca Holloway fired a shot from outside the 18-yard box just out of reach of a diving Christie Funk to give Cumberland the 1-0 led. UC looked for the equalizer however couldn't convert on their two opportunities as Cumberland took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
 
Coming out of the break UC fired of five quick shots with two getting blocked and three saves. The score remained 1-0 until the 52' minute Sara Randez launched a shot which deflected off the crossbar, but Randez followed through off grabbing the rebound and placed the ball into the lower left corner of the net for the 1-1 equalizing goal. The Patriots continued their strong offensive play looking to score again. Competitive play between both teams took control of the second half. For the last 18 minutes of the contest UC out-shot the Phoenix 7-2 however neither team scored forcing overtime.
 
In the first overtime Cumberland took the first shot sailing wide. UC played strong defense only allowing two more shots in the first overtime. With that they kept the score at 1-1 to push a second overtime.
 
In the second overtime, Randez looked to score the winning goal however was saved by Ashley Kambeitz. Jody LeMaster fired a shot as well which was saved. In the last 30 seconds of the game Alanna Skinner took two corner kicks, however Cumberlands could not connect for the game winner. After 110 minutes of play the game ended in a 1-1.
 
Randez would notch her 11th goal of the season. In the net Funk tallied six saves in the contest. Cumberlands out-shot Cumberland 27 to 16.
