Patriots Win Over Grenadiers Due to Forfeit

UPDATED AS OF 11/8/18 - UC EARNS VICTORY IN CONTEST VIA FORFEIT

Williamsburg, KY – A hot start to the contest for UC was no match for the perimeter shooting of the Grenadiers as the Cumberlands Men's Basketball team fell to Indiana University-Southeast 82-78. The loss moves the Patriots to 1-1 overall on the season.

Off the opening tip-off, the Patriots were lights out, beginning the game on a 10-0 run in the first two minutes of play. IU-SE would not be denied though as they would answer with an 11-3 run of their own to cut the lead to just two at 13-11 with 14 minutes left in the half. Trading baskets for much of the half, the Grenadiers would steadily inch their way back closer with the occasional three before taking a lead at 20-19 with just over nine to play. The lead would see-saw back and forth up to halftime where the Grenadiers held their largest lead of the half at 38-34.

IU-Southeast started the second half strong with six of their first eight made baskets coming from beyond the arc. Cumberlands would continue to answer, but would only find shots of the two-point variety as the Grenadiers lead 62-51 with just ten to play in the game. The lead would get to 15 for IU-SE, but back would come the Patriots. A 15-5 run from Cumberlands would put the game back within five at 78-73 with just under three to go. A hoop-and-harm for IU-SE would push their lead to 81-73, but five straight points by Danny Butt would make it 81-78 with 11 seconds to play.

The Patriots would force a five-second violation to get the ball back, but could not get a clean look as the three-point attempt would go off the iron and into the hands of the Grenadiers, who would hit one of two free throws with three ticks left to take the 82-78 win over the Patriots in Williamsburg.

Leading the way for the Patriots was Jahi Hinson with 16 points, three rebounds, and an assist. Malik Colvin-Seldon and Jordan Griggs both added 13 points and eight rebounds each while Butt chipped in 14 points off the bench. The Patriots shot 43.7% from the floor, but just 5-24 (20.8%) from deep in the game. Cumberlands pounded the ball down low scoring 44 points in the paint. They also had 28 points off turnovers, 18 second-chance points, and 31 points off the bench.

IU-Southeast was solid throughout the contest, shooting 49.2% from the field including 15-33 (45.5%) from beyond the three. Guard Jamie Johnson led all scorers with 22 points, seven rebounds, and seven helpers.

UC returns to action on Friday, November 2nd as they host the Lions of Bryan College. In just the fourth meeting between the schools, the Patriots defeated the Lions last November 74-60 in Williamsburg. Tip-off is set for 7 pm.
