Men’s Soccer Blanks Pikeville 2-0

Williamsburg, KY – Marvin van der Made scored two goals in the first half to propel the University of the Cumberlands men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the University of Pikeville in a Mid-South Conference match on Saturday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex.

Van der made struck quickly to give Cumberlands (5-2-2, 2-1-0 MSC) a 1-0 lead over Pikeville (8-4-0, 1-1-0 MSC). In the fifth minute, Renato Skoko played the ball ahead to van der Made who fired a shot on goal. The first shot was saved by Pikeville's goalkeeper Anibal Navarro, but van der Made kicked in his own rebound for the goal. Then in the 11' minute, van der Made scored again to make the score 2-0 Patriots. He received a ball down the left side of the field from Nicklas Nancke, ran into the left side of the 18-yard box, and fired a shot that ended up inside the far post. Nancke garnered his fifth assist of the season on the play.

The Patriots did not score again, but they were dominant for the remainder of the first half with multiple chances. UC outshot Pikeville 13-3 in the first 45 minutes, including 6-1 in shots on goal. The Bears got a red card in the 26' minute and played down a man for the remainder of the match.

In the second half, the Patriots limited the Bears' opportunities. Cumberlands outshot Pikeville 9-0 (4-0 shots on goal) in the second half for a match total of 22-3 (10-1). The Patriots largely kept the ball away from the Bears as they cruised to the 2-0 victory.

Van der Made led all players with four shots on goal, while Sergio Infantes had three and Nancke had two.

UC's Clement May (4-2-2) made one save for his third shutout of the season and lowered his goals against average to 0.94. Anibal Navarro stopped eight shots for Pikeville.

The Patriots continue MSC play against Shawnee State at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9 in Portsmouth, OH.
