Patriots Bring Home Brass Lantern in Most Lopsided Win over Union in Series History

Barbourville, KY – After allowing a touchdown on Union's opening drive, the UC Football team would go to work, setting a number of series records as they would score 67 unanswered points to thwart the Bulldogs of Union College 67-7, the largest margin of victory in the series' history. The Patriots move to 6-1 overall on the season with the win and 1-1 in Mid-South Conference Appalachian Division play.

The Patriots would start the game with the ball with Railond Garrett getting the start at quarterback in the contest.  UC would go three-and-out, punting away with Union taking over on their 17 yard line. The Bulldogs would put together a 12-play drive that 10765took over seven minutes off the clock, capped by a nine yard TD run by Izayah Riettie, to put Union on the scoreboard first. The extra point from Seth Burke was good, giving Union the 7-0 lead. Cumberlands would respond and in a timely fashion. After Zalon Reynolds returned the kickoff 24 yards to the UC 39 yard line, Garrett would take the ball on a read option 61 yards to paydirt, notching his first TD as a Patriot. The point after from Devon McMillin was no good, leaving Union ahead 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, Cumberlands would really get their offense going. Union was unsuccessful on a fourth down conversion, giving the Patriots the ball on the Union 39 yard line. Four straight carries by Milton Shelton would result in a seven yard TD run, pushing UC out front. McMillin's extra point was blocked, making it 12-7 Cumberlands. Union's next drive was cut short as Adam Johnson would force a fumble that would be recovered by Jay Woods, giving UC good field position on their 35 yard line. Three plays later, Shelton would find the endzone again, this time from 19 yards out, for his second touchdown run of the half. The two-point conversion would be successful as Zalon Reynolds would punch it in to give UC a 20-7 lead with just over nine minutes left in the half.

Union would march the ball down to the UC 42 yard line before going for it again on fourth down. They would be turned away again, turning the ball over once again on downs with 5:26 to play in the half. Cumberlands would waste no time again as a four play drive would see the Patriots' Garrett take his second trip to the endzone from 27 yards out to extend UC's lead. The two-point conversion was no good, making the score 26-7 Patriots with 3:40 to go in the half. The teams would trade possessions as UC would get the ball again before the half would end. A 46 yard punt return by Jaron Hull would set the Patriots up at Union's 15 yard line. After a 14 yard completion to Austin Ysidro, Garrett would hand the ball to Jaylen Odom who punched it in from a yard out, increasing UC's lead yet again. The two-point conversion was no good, making it 32-7 at the half.

10766Union would get the ball to begin the third, but their possession wouldn't last long. On the first play, Jamaria Patterson would force a fumble that would be recovered by Adam Johnson, giving the Pats the ball back immediately on the Union 41 yard line. There, a four play drive would end with another one yard TD run, this one from Shelton, for his third touchdown run of the day. McMillin's point after was good, making it 39-7 Patriots. A three-and-out from the Bulldogs would force a punt, but a second kick-catch interference flag would haunt Union, giving the Patriots the ball on Union's 43 yard line. Four more carries by Shelton would lead to a five yard TD run, his fourth of the game, as UC would blow the game open. The extra point was good, making it 46-7 Patriots midway through the third.

Union would pick up a first down on their next drive, but would be forced to punt again. This time, the ball would roll out of bounds as UC's possession would begin on their 39 yard line. A 55-yard run by Reynolds would set up a five yard TD run by Garrett, his third touchdown on the ground in the game. The point after by McMillin was good, making it 53-7 Cumberlands after three quarters of play.

The Bulldogs had a solid drive going to end the third, but a fourth and one try would be snuffed out by the Patriot defense as UC would take over on their 15 yard line. Jaylen Odom would then get his turn at running back and break one for 67 yards, setting up first and goal from the eight yard line. There, Nyre Holden would use two attempts to punch it in from seven yards out, extending the lead to 60-7. The Bulldogs would tally two first downs on their next drive, but again would be turned away on a fourth down attempt as the Patriots would again take over on their 38 yard line. UC would put together a final scoring drive, this one on 11 plays capped by a one yard TD run on fourth down by Adam McClain, his first score of the season and the ten rushing touchdown for the Patriots on the night. McMillin's PAT was good as Cumberlands would set a new series record for the largest margin of victory in a 67-7 win over the Bulldogs.

Cumberlands would tally 522 yards of offense with 495 coming on 42 attempts, averaging out to 11.8 yards per carry. It was the most yards rushing by a Patriots' team since November 6th, 2010 when UC ran for 575 yards against Faulkner. Shelton would lead the way with 170 yards on 16 carries (10.6 YPC) with four touchdowns. Garrett added 99 yards on four carries with three scores of his own. Odom chipped in 83 yards on six carries with a touchdown while Holden and McClain each found the endzone once. Austin Ysidro caught two passes for 12 yards.

Defensively, the Patriots were very sharp. Tyler Pendleton would lead all tacklers with eight total tackles (five solo) with three tackles for loss. Adam Johnson added seven tackles (five solo) with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Drew Howard also chipped in with six tackles (two solo) with a tackle for loss. As a unit, the Patriots tallied 12 tackles for loss, three sacks, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

The Patriots now ready themselves for another road trip on Saturday, October 13th as they travel south to take on the Skyhawks of Point University. Kickoff is set for 1:30 pm.
