Montreat, NC – UC Women's Basketball returned to the road on Saturday as they traveled to North Carolina to take on the Cavaliers of Montreat College. UC has had a strong start to the season and carried that momentum into another big victory on Saturday. Six Patriot ladies scored in double figures as UC defeated the Cavaliers 82-69 to move to 4-0 on the year.
In the first quarter, UC's only lead came with the first basket of the contest from
Megan Morton. There, Montreat would have a solid offensive quarter as they would pull away by as much as eight points but held a 27-21 lead after one. Cumberlands would have a fantastic second quarter as they opened on a 20-6 run to take a 41-33 lead with just over four minutes left in the half. After the Cavaliers would bring it within three at 41-38, Cumberlands would go on another run, this one 12-2 over the final three minutes of the quarter as the Patriots would lead 53-40 at the break.
UC would increase their lead to 15 at one point of the third quarter but would see the lead diminish a bit as the time expired. Cumberlands did extend the lead back to double digits and led by ten at 65-55 with ten minutes to play. Again in the fourth, Montreat would cut the lead to seven, but that was as close as they could get as UC would pull away for the 82-69 win.
Leading the way for the Patriots was
Shayla Simpson with 22 points (8-13 FG), seven rebounds, and four steals.
Callia Cropp and Morton would both shoot 5-8 from the floor to chip in 12 points each. Morton would haul in seven rebounds as well.
Summer Cramer added 12 points off the bench while
Jasmine Rhodes and
Kayla Bruner each added 10 points.
Cumberlands shot 55.2% from the field and 38.5% from three-point land. The Patriots outrebounded Montreat 35-28 while outscoring them in the paint 48-20. The Cavaliers were led by Caleigh Raby with 17 points.
The Patriots return to action on Tuesday, November 6
