Patriots Suffer First Loss against Tornadoes

Williamsburg, KY – Two unbeaten teams took to the floor in the O. Wayne Rollins Center as the UC Patriot ladies would host the Tornadoes of Talladega College. After a closely contested first half of play, a big third quarter for the Tornadoes would propel them to victory as the Patriots would suffer their first defeat of the season by a score of 91-69. UC now sits at 4-1 overall on the season.

In the first quarter, Talladega would begin the game on an 8-0 run. UC would answer with their own 8-0 to tie the game before Cumberlands would fall behind by six at the end of the quarter at 14-10. A back and forth second quarter would see Talladega pull out in front by a score of 31-26 at the half.

The third quarter would be where UC struggled while the Tornadoes would flourish. Outscoring the Patriots by 11 in the quarter, Cumberlands found themselves behind 58-42 with ten minutes to play. Some sloppy play by both teams in the fourth would actually lead both teams to their most prolific quarter of scoring, but it was the Tornadoes adding to their cushion as they would come away with the 24 point win over the Patriots.

Leading the way for UC was Madison Meier with 17 points off the bench on 7-8 shooting from the floor. She added six rebounds and a pair of blocks. Shayla Simpson chipped in 15 points and five rebounds in the loss. The Patriots shot just 38.5% from the field but 41.2% from three point range.

Both Brijanee Moore and Jazmin Nelson led all scorers with 21 points each for Talladega. Moore added nine assists and seven steals in the game while Nelson hauled in five rebounds. Diamond Jolly (19 pts., 12 rebs.) added a double-double as well. Talladega shot 50% from the floor but just 2-11 (18.2%) from beyond the arc.

UC was outrebounded in the contest 41-30 while the Tornadoes went to the free throw line 38 times in the contest, converting on 25 of those.

The Patriots return to action on the road on Saturday, November 10th as they take on College of Coastal Georgia. Tip-off is set for 2 pm in Brunswick, Georgia.
