Cumberlands Conquers Carver in Men’s Basketball Matchup

Atlanta, GA – The Patriot Men's Basketball team looked to finish out their trip to Georgia on Saturday with a victory over the Cougars of Carver College. A great shooting day to go along with a solid defensive effort would push UC over the top of the Cougars by a final of 72-60. The win moves the Patriots to 18-5 overall on the year.

Carver would grab the lead with the opening bucket of the game, but it was the only lead they would hold in the contest. After holding the 2-0 lead at 18:37 in the first, the Patriots would begin their offensive push with a 12-2 run over the next 4:18 to take a 12-4 lead. Carver would do everything they could to cut into the lead, getting it as close as five at 21-16 with 7:52 to play in the half, but the Pats would shoot nearly 54% in the first half including 7-14 from deep to carry a 41-32 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Cougars would open play outscoring the Patriots 7-3 to make it 44-39 UC. This would be the closest Carver would get the rest of the game as Cumberlands would push their lead quickly back out to double digits, where it would stay for a majority of the half. The Patriots would continue to shoot well from deep, going 5-10 from three-point range in the final 20 minutes while also going perfect from the charity stripe as UC would pull away for the 72-60 victory.

A pair of Patriots would lead the way in the win. Chance Morton would tally his fifth double-double of the season with 20 points and 13 rebounds while Bernard Samuel would also score 20 points to go with eight rebounds and three assists. Anthony Eaves chipped in 13 points and three assists off the bench while Eric Duncan would add 11 points, four rebounds, and a pair of helpers.

Cumberlands now turn their attention back to Mid-South Conference action on Thursday, February 8th as they will host the NAIA 10th ranked Tigers of Georgetown College in a big Top 25 matchup. Game time is set for 8 pm.
